The Mexican American War (1846-1848) added Texas and the New Mexico Territory. This established the Rio Grande River as the border river and included land all the way to the Pacific Ocean. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended this war with a payment of $15 million to Mexico. California was ceded to the US as well after the war. So far, we haven’t found a quilt commemorating this. Cameras in black and white were spreading in the mid-1800s. By the Centennial cameras were more common.

The development of the States and the settling of territories along with fights with Native Americans for land and rights left us with a shortage of pictures of quilts from that era. Quilts in the West were primarily functional and were often worn out.

The Whig party was created in 1833-34 by two Republicans, Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams. It lasted until 1856. They were anti President Jackson and the Democratic Party. They opposed autocratic rule. The Whig Rose quilt is located at the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. It was created between 1895 and 1910.

In 1844 Polk used Fifty-Four Forty or Fight as a Campaign slogan. This was to secure the Oregon Territory for the United States. Quilters rose to the occasion and created a block. Before the war was over Andrew Jackson made a name for himself at the Battle of New Orleans which led to his political rise to the presidency.
