Organic Fabric Company

Organic Fabric Company Welcome to the Organic Fabric Company! We are family owned and operated, specializing in organic, sustainable, and eco-friendly fabrics.

Located in sunny San Diego, California, the Organic Fabric Company was established by husband (Peter) and wife (Gabriela--a life-long fabric enthusiast and seamstress) to offer individuals high-quality, eco-friendly, sustainable fabric options without the confusion of sorting through pages of conventionally grown cotton products. With over two decades of experience in sewing, designing clothing,

baby items, and accessories, we have learned the ins and outs of all things fabric. Our little collection of fabric prints has grown over the years, and we decided to extend our curated collections on to you! Having a growing family of our own, we have come to learn the value of organic and chemical-free living, and seek to extend this to every aspect of our lives--especially textiles. We choose all of our fabric with love, thought, and the end consumer in mind. Each print we choose represents a piece of who we are. We love our soft, beautiful, vibrant organic fabrics, and we are sure you will too! Together, let's change the textile industry--one yard at a time!

There was a moment — I was sewing tiny cloth diapers at my kitchen table — when I realized I had no idea what was actually in the fabric I was using.

I knew the fiber content. It said cotton. But I didn’t know how it was processed, what finishes had been applied, or whether any of it had been tested for what goes against a baby’s skin all day.

That question sent me down a long road. I started reading labels differently. Asking suppliers questions they weren’t used to being asked. Learning what certifications actually meant versus what was just good marketing copy.

It changed how I sourced everything — and eventually it became the entire reason OFC exists. I wanted to be the place where a maker could come and already have those questions answered. Where the hard work of vetting had been done before the fabric ever made it onto the site.

I still think about that kitchen table. That moment of not knowing. It’s still what drives how I build this shop.

What made you start paying attention to what’s in your fabric? I’d love to know.

“Natural fiber” sounds straightforward. It isn’t.

The term just means the fiber originated from a plant or animal — cotton, linen, wool, silk, h**p. That’s it. It says nothing about how the fiber was grown, processed, or finished before it became fabric.

A natural fiber can still be grown with heavy pesticide use. It can still be bleached, dyed with synthetic chemicals, or treated with wrinkle-resistant finishes. The word “natural” on a bolt end doesn’t change any of that.

This is why I use natural fiber as a starting point, not a finish line. What I actually want to know is what certifications the fabric carries. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 tests the finished fabric — after all growing and processing — for harmful substances. That’s the part “natural” doesn’t tell you.

Natural fiber is good. Certified natural fiber is better. Now you know the difference.

I have a problem with always moving fast. New products, quick decisions, always more. Although this is very much my internal energy, that wasn’t the kind of business I wanted to build.

Slow sewing changed me. Spending time working with fabric — feeling the difference between a fabric that’s been carefully processed and one that hasn’t, watching how natural fibers move and age — shifted something in how I think about sourcing.

About 15 years ago, I started asking more questions. Taking longer to vet new fabrics before turning them into something. Saying “no” to things that didn’t meet the standard, even when they were beautiful.

My shop is smaller in some ways. More considered. I refuse to chase every trend and focus on the fabrics I’d actually want to work with myself — the ones I could stand behind completely.

I don’t think that makes OFC less. I think it makes it more.

If you’re a slow sewist — someone who makes things with intention, who cares about what goes into a quilt or bag or garment — I built this shop for you.💕

What does slow sewing mean to you? I’d love to know.

Linen is one of the most durable natural fibers you can sew with. Most people don’t treat it that way.

Here’s what I’ve learned from years of working with it:

Wash in cool or warm water — never hot. Heat breaks down the fiber structure over time and causes shrinkage that can’t be undone. Cold water is gentler and works just as well.

Skip the dryer when you can. Line dry or lay flat. Linen actually gets softer and more beautiful with air drying. The dryer works in a pinch, but low heat only.

Don’t over-wash it. Linen is naturally resistant to dirt and odor. Spot clean when you can. A garment that’s aired out and spot cleaned will outlast one that’s washed every wear.

Press while still slightly damp. This is the secret to that crisp, beautiful finish linen is known for.

Treat it well and linen becomes something you pass down — not something you replace.

There’s a quiet shift that happens when you begin clearing your sewing space…
Not just tidying—but choosing.
Choosing what stays close to your hands.
Choosing what becomes part of the pieces you’ll wear, gift, and pass down.
Decluttering isn’t about having less for the sake of less…
it’s about making room for what truly inspires you.
The fabrics you reach for with excitement.
The textures that feel like home.
The projects that align with the life you’re gently building.
And sometimes, it simply begins with a few honest questions.
If your sewing space has been feeling a little heavy or overwhelming,
this is your invitation to soften it… one piece at a time.

That ‘natural’ label on your fabric? It’s probably not telling you the whole story.

Words like “eco-friendly,” “green,” and “sustainable” are marketing terms — not regulated standards. Brands can print them on anything, and many do.

Here’s what actually matters: third-party certifications. GOTS and OEKO-TEX are the two you can trust. If you see either of those logos, someone independent has verified exactly what’s in that fabric.

Next time you shop, skip the front of the label and go straight to the composition and any certification marks. It takes 10 seconds and it changes everything.

Want the full breakdown of every certification worth knowing — and what they actually mean?

“Where do I even start?”
That’s it. That’s the question. And honestly, I love it every single time — because it means someone is ready to make a change and just needs a little guidance.
So here’s my answer: start with one yard of something that excites you. That’s it. One project. One fabric. Certified, beautiful, and made to last.
You don’t have to overhaul your whole stash overnight. You just have to start.

Think about it — you wear clothing for 12–16 hours a day. Your skin is your largest organ, and it absorbs what it comes into contact with. Conventional fabrics are often treated with formaldehyde, synthetic dyes, and chemical finishes that don’t fully wash out.
That’s why fabric certification isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s a health decision.

All of our fabrics carry either GOTS organic or OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification — meaning they’ve been tested and verified to be free from harmful substances.
Your body deserves to know what it’s wrapped in. 🌿
