April 19, 2020 -- With only five sticks per box and just 300 boxes produced, the quantity of the Villiger San’Doro Claro Limited Edition Diademas is limited to just 1,500 globally. These double-tapered gems, measuring six inches and a ring gauge of 58 at their widest point, are a new release shipped to Villiger retailers in March 2020. Because of its limited production, other online reviews of the Diademas appear to be nonexistent at this time.
The cigar is produced at the Joya de Nicaragua Ci**rs factory in Estelí, Nicaragua using domestic fillers and binders surrounded by gorgeous, silky Ecuadorian-grown Connecticut seed wrapper. The construction is excellent with seams so small that you have to look closely to identify them. The beautiful, smooth wrapper has thin veins and, to the touch, it’s on the firmer side but still has some appropriate give when pinched.
After being lit, the impressive draw delivers a lot of flavor that is creamy, nutty and vanilla. The middle region of the cigar opens up to include earthiness, leather, hay and citrus. The retrohale through the nose highlights a delightful mustiness associated with pricey Davidoff Ci**rs that is pure class. The final third of the cigar develops a hearty well-balanced meatiness while remaining earthy.
The Villiger San’Doro’s light shade-style wrapper masks a medium bodied cigar that delights the palate. One has to consider that the tapered end contributes to a nicely concentrated full flavor as the smoke exits the cigar to enter the mouth and gives it a significant leg up on its siblings of the same blend in different vitolas more widely available.
It’s cousins—the Villiger San’Doro with the same Nicaraguan filler and binder surrounded by an Ecuadorian-grown Colorado wrapper—have twice appeared on Cigar Aficionado’s annual top 25 lists, with the churchill ranking No. 15 in 2018 and the robusto coming in at No. 21 in 2016.
Overall, this was a delightful, beautifully-constructed smoke with a complex, unique flavor profile that is very enjoyable to smoke. With production being so small, it’s remarkable that James and Sons Tobacconists is fortunate enough to have five boxes of these awaiting its customers.
