We get asked often to be a vendor in various antique / vintage shops, and we have been in shops in the past, but right now, it’s just not the time.
They want you there weekly refreshing your space and it’s just a lot on me right now to commit. I find a lot of the rent fees a bit high, with adding on a percentage of the sale claim too. Of course we should pay for our space, and a fee for allowing us to sell there, it’s just lately, I’m seeing booth fees of $250 or more a month being offered, with 10, 15 to 20% of the sale claim too. One may need to sell $350 to just break even with their rent.
An Etsy shop breakdown - 6.5% transaction fee, 3% and .25 for payment processing on our behalf and .20 per listing we put up, so lets say roughly 10% a sale is what Etsy is taking. They collect the shipping cost for me, so my time is an effort, but it’s at least from our home.
“If you have great items, what are you complaing about, wouldn’t they sell in a shop!?” I’m not complaining, I’m just telling you why we are not in a brick and mortar shop.
Another big truth reason, people browse antique / vintage shops, like as a day out for something to do, whereas people search online with an intent to find and buy.
What is wrong with doing both, nothing! If I could find the right fit for me and my schedule, I’d do it. A shelf in a consignment shop, or boutique probably more than a large shop, with seasonal themes, I’d rather curate a vibe that way. It’s why I love doing markets right now. There’s a fee, and I build my space to meet a more searching customer base, then it’s over and I can plan my next outing.
I easily sell here on FB and on our Instagram page too, you can always message me directly if you see something here, regardless if it is in our Etsy shop or not. But will you find us in a shop or mall soon, probably not.
Ideally, I will have my own shop with coffee, music and plant vibes when I retire. I can dream…
ANYWAY… Check out this new trend happening right now though - hanging egg plates!!! I fell in love with this pic when I saw it shared by a fellow vintage seller.
