My mentor was Trans and for most of her early life lived in fear of being harmed. As she transitioned into her true self she then still was not visible because it would have been the only thing or novelty of her fame. She offered her visibility in her autobiography at the age of 81 and in her book she felt she had to apologize. In our last conversation, I called her and told her I'm sorry that the world made her feel she had to apologize for being a woman. I really loved my mentor and I hope support helps to show people that there is support and I will stand with you and visibility. I love you Marinka and I miss you.

We are all of us in the gutter, some of us are looking at the stars. Do song lyrics ever inspire you? I didn't know growing up that this quote was more than just a song lyric. I heard it as a peppy tuned with a line the stood out sung by the rock goddess Chrissy Hines of The Pretenders....

This piece is inspired by a lyric from the Pretenders, but actually is a quote from Oscar Wilde. A painting of a woman with black hair and a red dahlia in her hair with little bees. She is touching a flaming heart symbol with pins. Around her head is the quote, "We are all of us in the gutters. But some of us are looking at the stars" to inspire.
