I love a generous shawl, an easy-wearing layer, and fabric that moves with you. How a project feels on your body matters just as much as how the stitches look. When I’m designing, I’m thinking about both. The goal is something you’re proud to have made—and genuinely excited to wear.
You’re putting your time, yarn, and creativity into making it. Your comfort and preferences belong in the process, too. My Formation Vest crochet pattern comes in nine sizes for busts up to 62″, and designs like the Copa Crop give you room to personalize the length. Making something yourself should come with options.
I taught myself to crochet in 2019, and eventually, following the instructions wasn’t enough. I wanted to understand why they worked. Why does that increase go there? What changes when I use a different hook? That curiosity shapes how I teach. I want you to understand your stitches well enough to make decisions of your own.
A project doesn’t need a long list of unfamiliar stitches to keep you interested. My Copa Crop starts with two rectangles and uses single, double, and treble crochet. Sometimes, a fun twist in the construction is enough to make familiar stitches feel new. Approachable doesn’t have to mean predictable.
A swatch has more jobs than counting stitches! It’s a place to feel your fabric, compare hooks, or try something before committing to a whole project. I use small swatches when teaching shaping, too. Seeing what happens when you add or move an increase can tell you more than simply reading about it.
I’m a green-loving Ta**us, so my yarn choices tend to give me away. But your version never needs to match mine. Choose the colors you’re excited to spend time with—and even more excited to wear. I love seeing a familiar design take on a completely different personality in someone else’s palette.
