Steve Vai and Joe Satriani kicked off April in the most epic way possible, treating Seattle to an evening of shredding unlike anything else. Their show at the Paramount Theatre marked the opening night of the Surfing with the Hydra tour, which will carry the two guitar legends across U.S. cities throughout April and May.

Vai and Satriani’s performance felt technical yet relaxed, intimate without ever losing its scale—a musical conversation between two longtime friends. It was as if they invited the entire theater to lean in and listen as decades of stories unfolded, told through their distinct, unmistakable voices on the guitar.

Attending to the show, countless nameless ghouls and ghoulettes which made for an evening that felt so much more than just a concert but a celebration of music. I don’t know if there is sound if a tree falls and nobody is there to listen, but one thing I can tell you for certain: if you close a venue and there is an abundance of talented people affected by it, you will hear about it.
This is the story of Madame Lou’s—a cozy venue nestled just below The Crocodile in Seattle, inhabited and managed by the friendliest and most passionate crew you could imagine. Madame Lou’s has hosted its fair share of local bands as well as touring acts and has been a breeding ground for aspiring greatness.

At the end of October, it was announced that Madame Lou’s, along with Here After, would be closing its doors by December 2025. As a way of honoring the legacy of the venue, on December 13th, Madame Lou’s hosted a show with a lineup like no other—featuring solo and band acts composed of the very people who work at the venue. It was beautiful and emotional to see so many talented people pour their hearts out through their performances, as well as their words of encouragement and resilience to one another. The dignity and pride on display was something that moved me like no other show.

I was welcomed by the amazing Carline Anne, who took me behind the scenes and introduced me to the many people who made that night—and countless previous nights—possible: people who are on the front lines of making live music happen, people who keep the dream, the aspiration, and the goal alive for so many of us aspiring musicians.

In a time where we constantly read about thousands of layoffs, it’s easy for those impacted to carry the burden silently, and to that, it was inspiring to see that this was not going to be the story of Madame Lou’s and their brave group of amazing humans.

Very few bands were as formative to me growing up as Sonata Arctica, Full Moon is burned into my memory and continued to be one of my favorite songs to play on the drums, I love these guys and can’t wait to see them back again in Seattle.

There isn’t a show like Between the Buried and Me, the technically woven power of their music galvanized the air at the crocodile as they brought their brilliant act in support of their new album –The Blue Nowhere– to Seattle.

The Blue Nowhere has quickly become one of my all-time favorite albums, and I have had it on constant rotation since it came out.  The Blue Nowhere delivers on what we have come to expect from a BTBAM album, all-around virtuosity, but with a subtle and playful new style.  The album stars with the banger –Things We Tell Ourselves in the Dark– The combination of the sound of the keyboard, samples on the drums as well as the playfulness of the guitar, reminiscent of 80s pop music, gives a certain “genesisesque” vibe to the track and sets the tone of the rest of the album.  Track after track, The Blue Nowhere takes us into a journey of brutality, silliness and technicality.  The album delivers on something familiar, but with a sick new twist, love it!

There is something to be said about the efficiency of BTBAM, they will deliver as much music as possible in their set, there is no small talk, no jokes, just a continuous stream of pure energy and awesomeness!  If you are lucky to be in the path of their tour, they are DEFINITELY A MUST!!

There are multiple reasons why seeing BTBAM live has become an obligation for me, one of such reasons is this gentleman here —Mr Blake Richardson— one of the best drummers out there and a really cool dude.

As a drummer — seeing Blake deliver some of the most powerful, technically complicated, and tasteful drum performances is inspirational and aspirational… all while visibly having a great time, breaking smiles and even putting shades on. After a show that would have any professional athlete looking for a quiet place to recover, he will go back and hang with the crowd, answer questions and take photos with fans.

As a photographer — taking photos of Blake is, without a doubt, one of the biggest challenges you can have. As stated before, the power of his performance is second to none, combine that with complicated lighting and a literal wall of cymbals and toms and you end up with a few places where you can access his face; to gain access to that shooting window, you need to be, somewhat center off the stage… right in front (or behind) the mosh pit!! Well… CHALLENGE ACCEPTED 💪🏽🤘🏼

With this show, BTBAM has become the band that I have photographed the most, and this performance was, in my opinion, the one with the most brutal set list, I mean… first song and there was people crowd surfing!! what a good time.

Linkin Park just gifted Seattle a night to remember.  Their electrifying performance, mixed with a one-of-a-kind stage, immersed every single soul at the climate pledge arena, into a beautiful journey through their music catalog.

The band’s strong connection was made evident by the playfulness of their performance, there wasn’t any shortage of laughs, dancing, jumping, singing, and screaming!

With this show, they close the North American leg of their tour, venturing to South America next month.  Join us in whishing them good luck and hoping we can see them back soon!

I love how these photos of Adam turned out. Somehow they capture the dreamy vibe of that evening!

Adam has become one of my favorite drummers, the way he blends the heaviest of beats with the grooviest or rhythms is masterful. This is my first time seeing Vola live and I came out of that show inspired and with a newfound drive to keep getting better at drums!!
