Kouassi Norbert Akou (known professionally by the mononym Akou) is an international fashion designer with more than 15 years of experience on four different continents who is currently based in the United Arab Emirates. He was born and raised in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire and at 18 years old won a national competition to study fashion at ESMOD in Paris, France. Diploma in hand, he went on to work at d

ozens of festivals and fashion shows throughout West Africa and France. In 2011 he took up residence in New York City and launched his AKOU New York fashion business. He showed collections at numerous shows including Fashion Week Brooklyn and at a private exposition during New York Fashion Week in New York. After travelling to Thailand to explore production, he opened an independent summer pop-up shop in Harlem and currently has selected works on sale at various locations in New York, including Perez Sanz at their iconic Madison & 69th Street location. He has worked on teams and advised multiple fashion designers in New York – from bridal boutiques to Broadway costume design companies. In 2016 he relocated to Abu Dhabi, where he continues to build his client base.
