I am so grateful I was able to spend over 10 years of my life learning and perfectly a skill that is lost.
I am honored to have worked with some of the best people I’ve known.
I am humbled by this experience. I never thought it was going to be easy, but it’s weighs heavy on the soul. (No pun intended)
I am happy that many people still want and need my service and expressed how sad they are to see me leave.
I have met some of the most interesting people shining shoes. I’ve met rich and poor. Sad and happy. I’ve talked to many people of different backgrounds. I’ve gotten to listen and talk to people with different perspectives. I got to learn something new everyday, and that makes me happy.

One of my favorite customers back in the day, was a man named Darrell. When I first met him he wore a puffy white long sleeve button up, knee length overcoat, red leather pants, calf high combat boots, a very large hat with a feather in it. All he needed was an iguana on his shoulder. First time I shined his boots, the cost was $3.50, he reached for his hip, and he took out a leather pouch, and gave me 5 gold $1 coins as payment! As if he was a pirate paying with dabloons! I thought there was a comic-con convention in town, nope. I saw him a month later, same get up, and payment. That was just how he lived.
He also gave me 3 bits of advice:
1: always have a clean pair of shoes. People judge you on your shoes.
2: own a vacuum cleaner. You’re grown, clean up after yourself. Also tells any potential partners you don’t need a maid.
3: learn how to cook. That’s just obvious.
