Last week, we had the opportunity to learn about Black Jack Turquoise, a unique turquoise mined in Tonopah, Nevada, by the Otteson family, who have been in the mining business for over 80 years. Lynn Otteson, the family patriarch, initiated part-time mining operations in Nevada in 1944. The family relocated to Tonopah, Nevada, in 1960 to pursue full-time mining and has since been extracting high-quality turquoise. We are pleased to feature a selection of Black Jack turquoise necklaces, designed by our local Arizona jewelry artist, available at Caravana Jewelry. We look forward to sharing more information about exceptional Southwest turquoise in the future, courtesy of our Caravana Crew!

It is highly prized by collectors and jewelers for its intense visual contrast, featuring vibrant blue and deep green ribbons or webs set against a distinct, heavy black chert matrix.As a relative newcomer to the commercial gem market, its unique look has made it incredibly popular for high-end Southwestern and artisan sterling silver jewelry.Key Characteristics & OriginThe Location: Mined in the American Southwest out of Tonopah, Nevada. The deposit is actively operated by the well-known Otteson family, who also own the famous Royston Turquoise mine.The Appearance: Features a bold, brecciated pattern. Bright sky blues (from copper) and deep greens (from iron) bleed beautifully through a dark brown or jet-black host rock.Durability: Registers between 5 and 6 on the Mohs hardness scale. Melissa bio:
At a young age my passion for jewelry was sparkled! Growing up shortly outside of Manhattan I enjoyed the adventure of traveling into the city to purchase materials to include in my pieces. This turned into a strong desire for metalsmithing which eventually led me to the Pendland School of Crafts where I studied jewelry design and fabrication. From there I spent many years evolving through the fine jewelry industry working in design and sales.
Currently I am living in Sedona, Arizona where Caravana Jewelry is based. “Caravana” Reflects free spirited fun. The romanticized idea of roaming around in search of new adventure, art, culture, and findings. This is expressed in our jewelry by offering artistic pieces that are fun to wear!
The intense colors and natural textures that surround our studio in Sedona are inspiring. Metalsmithing techniques that date back as far as the ancient Egyptian‘s, to blacksmith and ironwork all the influence designs. Past travels and experience play their role as well.
All of our work are handmade in Sedona by experienced crafts people~
