First dress I have bought in years. We recently had an outdoor winter wedding to attend less than two weeks after Dickens on the Strand. There was no way I would have been able to make a velvet dress in that time frame. So here’s my find from . I am impressed by the quality of this dress! It is lined to the knee and the velvet is thick and drapey. It is polyester but feels luxurious. Sizing wise, I am pleasantly surprised that the sizing guide was accurate! The sleeves were a little tight on my upper arms but I have this in any OTR dress. I will have to hem it eventually as the hem was about 1” too long in my highest heels.

So if you’re looking for a great holiday dress, check them out.

and I have been inseparable since middle school. She’s always up for an adventure, especially if costumes are involved. So needless to say, she was excited to try out wearing a Victorian dress. And I was more than happy to indulge her.

The jacket is based on a pattern from the 1888 National Garment Cutter Book. The overskirt and underskirt are directly out of the book.

Fabric details:
All stash fabrics.
Pink fabric is poly cotton curtains I inherited from my grandfather.
Brown fabric is a thick poly stretch purchased from the $1 table about 15 years ago for a wizard’s robe I made for my husband.
Taupe is a poly silk or wool blend that I bought at the thrift store five years ago for $6 for about 8 yards.

I used a mix of patterns from The National Garment Cutter (1888), Der Bazaar (1888), and then altering my block to fit my corseted body.
The only new fabric I used was the lining fabric. Everything else was from my stash. The blue is a sheet set for a guest bed we no longer own. The patterned was a wrap skirt that I never wore. My petticoat (not pictured) is made from a sheet that had a hole in it.

Also, it has a pocket.

This corset is made with Dahlia pattern that has been altered to fit my very short torso. It is a single layer of coutil except for the center front and center back panels. The waiststay is a single layer of coutil with the blue fabric covering it. The blue fabric is leftover from a skirt that I made a few years ago.
The flossing is just three strands of DMC embroidery thread.

This is for my new Dickens on the Strand outfit. I still need to make a hip/bum pad to sit under it. As well as a bust improver to help fill out the top.

Make sure you’re following me to see the two dresses that I’m making this year for Dickens!

This outfit was a big leap for me. I don’t wear shorts generally and I almost never wear anything that shows my stomach. But I did it and I actually felt comfortable in it.

The shirt is my wrap back bodice made from a vintage eyelet/broderie anglaise, lined with a lightweight poplin.
~
The shorts are made from a navy cotton twill I got on clearance. I used Simplicity 8654 for the pattern but made similar alterations as . I wish I had moved the pleats even further out from the center in front but the additional 1” pleat depth was perfect. I’m going to make these again in a lightweight material to see how that looks. (Highly recommend going and watching Angela’s video about this pattern, it was a huge help!)

I have just returned from a wonderful vacation. My husband and I went on a cruise to celebrate our 15th anniversary. It was much needed and our first trip away without the kids.
~
I only wore clothing I made for the entirety of the cruise (excluding swimsuits, workout clothing, and sleepwear). This day’s wear includes dark blue 1940s high waisted jeans and a 1940s inspired peasant blouse made with a white on white floral printed fabric.
~
Jeans were made from Simplicity 8447 pattern. Blouse was self drafted from my basic block.

This yoked shirt is one of my recent patterns and I’m in love with it. It’s a great way to use up scrap fabrics. I can’t wait to make more of them.

A fantastic trip to the McNay this afternoon. Beautiful art work was enjoyed and best of all, I got to spend it with beautiful people.

This new dress is made from the embroidered poly blend fabric that I dyed recently. I drafted the pattern and while I think I have a few more tweaks, it’s almost perfect and I am planning on making many more dresses with it.

Finally getting ready to cut into some fabric I bought specifically for the cruise. The floral will be a 1940s play suit and the twill will be some 1940s shorts. Trying my hardest to not use black as my dark neutral in this wardrobe so relying on navy quite a bit. I am also trying to add in some other colors that I don’t use frequently, like red and mustard. But I’m also trying to make sure the items will be worn again and fit well into my daily wardrobe as well. It’s a precarious balance at times.

This is a wearable mock up of a dress I have planned for my cruise wardrobe. It’s a boatneck in front and a low back. Have to adjust the neckline as it’s a little higher than I would like but everything else is perfect. This was also all from my stash. The plain blue is leftover poly cotton from my daughter’s Anna costume (I have a tendency to overbuy.) and the printed navy is inherited from my great aunt’s stash after she passed. The petticoat is a vintage square dancing one that my grandmother gave me.

Still slowly perfecting my bodice block, but it’s getting there. I love this fabric and am sad that I am completely out of it. I’ve made a long sleeve blouse, a short sleeve blouse, and a skirt out of it.
