Sewing Fine Seams

Sewing Fine Seams I have been sewing since I was a child; I don't even remember my first project.

I started out making clothes, quilts, and accessories for my dolls and now I make all those things for people. I have never been one to step down from a challenge and I love to try new things. People tell me I do stellar work and whether that's true or not - be it mending a tear, altering jeans, hemming trousers, or creating something completely new - there is nothing I love better than having fab

ric in my hands. When I'm not milking cows, feeding pigs, or remodeling houses, you can find me in the sewing room.

Five years ago today, my little sewing business moved from the corner of Mama’s basement to my beautiful new room. It happens to be every bit as messy today as it was then, but so much lovelier. 🥹

Almost exactly a year ago, I did a “coming soon” post for my then in-progress work table. I finally finished and set it up over Christmas break and it is MARVELOUS! The better part of 6 years in the scheming and 12 months in construction. I designed and built it in interlocking chunks so that it could be assembled/disassembled to fit through an average doorway. 🤓😵‍💫 Since some people have asked, I did not make the legs myself. They were a ready made purchase and every bit as tricky to sand and seal as they look, but oh! the end result. 🥹 I’m so happy.

There were also LOTS of T-shirt quilts last summer. I had only ever had a couple per year before, but not last year. Doing so many in such quick succession enabled me to iron out (joke intended) my best system so far for working these through efficiently. My giant flannel board (bottom left in the photo) was invaluable for pinning up and arranging the squares.

It has been a loooong time since I last posted - so long that some people have asked if I’m “still doing alterations.” Yes, very much so! Life and business got busy and I just got out of the habit of posts! Prom season is here again and I have taken in several dresses to alter already. Here are some of the beauties I got to work with last spring; hemming, pinching in the side seams, taking up the shoulders, the usual things. Weren’t they lovely?

It’s not every day that an old friend becomes new family! My new cousin’s dress was too small when it arrived 😱, but I was able to fix it and it’s one on the prettiest dresses I’ve seen. It bustled especially beautifully, too.

Something BIG is coming to the studio soon. It’s been 5 years in the dreaming and 11 months thus far in the works, with plywood sheets and cut rails stowed wherever they’ll fit. Stay tuned to see my new work table come together! And, yes, I stuck a finger in the table saw along the way, but it’s still there; don’t try that.

This mother of the groom dress was INCREDILBE. It needed alterations around all the beaded parts, cups inserted, hips pinched in, all the good stuff. It was a challenge, but I was sad to see it go!

Nothing beats a good old patch job. A new piece of denim behind the hole and a little zigzag stitching around the edge fixed this old favorite right up.

This lady’s little desert-colored peasant dress had 2 slits in the skirt that she didn’t like, so she brought me some contrasting material to insert in them and it turned out really nicely.

Last fall was an awesome season, so much so that I fell off of posting! This
cinnamon brown bridesmaid dress was a gorgeous color to work with. It needed pulling up at the shoulders and all the crisscross straps, plus a modesty panel in the front neckline and hemming of several layers of skirt.
