Another Successful Framed Story! - Celebrity Edition

You might recognize this wonderful woman if you’re from Skokie! She’s been an avid supporter of Framed Eyewear for a long time now. She is always busy, so we went out of our way to style her in her office and then went back out to dispense her glasses.

We styled her in an amazing handmade pair of glasses. We made sure it fit her perfectly. She has a 100% perfect fit on her nose! That’s really rare!

She has a petite face, with voluminous hair so we had to make sure the frames actually fit her head. The shape we went with balances her hair perfectly as well.

We chose a beautiful burgundy horn color to give interest and pop without being too much.

She actually came to us because her glasses she bought elsewhere kept coming apart like in the photo. Unfortunately her last repair with them they instructed her to buy an eyeglass repair kit and fix them herself. As you can imagine she was in shock when they said that after she spent her hard earned money there. When we went to repair the frame, we discovered that the reason why it kept coming apart was there weren’t enough threads in the frame for the screw to hold onto for a long period of time. So we took it upon ourselves to take it and repair it the right way! It will take us some time, but it shouldn’t come loose again.

We created Framed to show there is a different way to look at eyewear. Everything we do has been carefully thought out with you at the heart of it! We are by appointment only so that we can give you ALL the attention you deserve.

P.S. NEVER buy those eyewear repair kits. Either the screwdriver doesn’t fit or the screws are too large. They are a waste of money. Happy to help with that when I am at the Repair Cafe on Tuesdays in Evanston.

How does Framed work?

I’ll be the first to admit it. I am breaking a lot of traditional optical rules with Framed Eyewear. I wanted to provide a different experience for my patients. Something that they’ve never had before. I wanted to tackle fit, quality, and feeling heard. There was only one way to do this.

1. You set up an appointment. That appointment is yours. It doesn’t belong to the patient waiting to butt ahead in line. It doesn’t belong to the patient on the phone. It doesn’t belong to the emails coming in, it’s yours. You get 1-2 hours of undivided attention during your guided eyewear experience.

2. You bring your own prescription. Either at the appointment or afterwards. Either way it doesn’t matter. I don’t charge differently for your prescription.

3. Before we begin your experience, we chat. We talk for about 10-20 minutes about what you’ve experienced and how we can provide a different perspective. We don’t touch a single frame until this is done.

4. Now we can have fun! This is the part people are used to. I style you in all kinds of eyewear. I push the bounds a little bit. As I go through the collection, I share a bit about each piece. I explain my thought process behind my choice. I tell a little story about that piece. I let you know what limitations the frame might have.

5. Once we’ve narrowed it down to your final 3-5 pieces, I get really picky. I start examining the fit of your eyewear. I examine the sizing. I determine if any alterations need to be done. Alterations is what it sounds like. Not just an adjustment, which we do as well. It’s a change to the eyewear to get it to do what we want.

6. Now we’ve chosen which piece(s) we want to add to your eyewear wardrobe. We can figure out what lens options you need.

7. This is something I do very differently. I don’t actually give you a ton of options. Many years ago an optical chain decided they would let the patient choose their lens material. This was a turning point in our industry. This process was created so that you would self select to up charge your own lenses. Language was put in place so that you’d think if you don’t choose the absolute thinnest lenses your glasses would look bad. This was not fair to the patient. You have no knowledge of the pros and cons of each lens material. No knowledge of what it would actually do to your glasses outcome. AND you would end up paying more than you needed to! So I removed the material choice altogether by not charging any differently for any material. We choose single vision or progressives. We choose color changing techniques. That’s about it.

8. I chose to remove the cost of material changes because I didn’t feel it was ethical to charge someone more because they were born with a higher prescription. I also removed the cost for anti-glare because I believe every pair of glasses should have that as standard. I also don’t charge taxes because I don’t believe in nickel and diming my patients. All these charges removed gives you a much more direct to consumer pricing that’s often lower than with vision insurance.

9. The frame quality I chose to carry is much higher than anything you can get elsewhere. I decided that you deserve to have frames that last decades and not years. I also wanted to be able to change a frame if we needed to. Introducing bespoke eyewear to the world. This means we can do any style, size, color, thickness, etc. ANYTHING we want to do. There is no limit. The kicker is my bespoke frames that are handmade in the U.S. and also based around your facial features are actually cheaper than your typical licensed frames.

10. Measurements. We take them all! We take measurements you’ve never even seen before. We accommodate for everything to make sure you have the absolute best vision possible!

11. Depending on what we do with your eyewear the glasses can take 2-3 weeks or it can take 2-3 months. I will walk you through the entire process and discuss what each piece would entail. The outcome is a much higher quality product that will last you perhaps the rest of your life.

12. Staffing is super important to us. We only hire the best opticians in the industry. We believe that you deserve the most knowledgeable opticians available. So they all have over 10 years of experience and are ABO certified or are working on it. Our current staff all have over 20 years and are ABO certified. They are also paid and treated fairly and ethically based on today’s standard of living. We found that it is extremely important to your experience to have happy staff.

Every single aspect of my business has been carefully thought through. Every single step and detail has been pure love and labor of 24 years of experience. I figured out what was missing and I put it all into Framed. We truly appreciate each and every patient and run our company ethically in every way.

Ever walk into an eyewear boutique or optical and think WOW!!!! So many options. I’m definitely going to find so many that I like. Then you go through the entire store and find nothing? You’re not alone!!!!

Why is that? Well most shops believe that if you have more frames, you can sell more eyewear. They don’t take into consideration what they’re actually buying. The collection isn’t curated for the specific area and clientele. What you’ll run into is actually 400 variations of the same thing in multiple colors and brand names. That is why you couldn’t find anything in a store that has over 3,000 frames! Check out the photos, this isn’t the kind of experience you want.

What does Framed Eyewear do? We have a LOT less frames 🤣. We will gladly tell you we don’t have nearly as many frames as most optical shops. This is absolutely intentional as with everything we do.

Why did we do this? First of all, you don’t need that many frames to choose from. It’s incredibly overwhelming and makes it hard for you to choose. We don’t sell more than one or two of the same thing. We don’t need to have 400 of them. There’s so many other shapes, thicknesses, styles, materials out there that you didn’t even know existed! We also host GUIDED EYEWEAR EXPERIENCES! Read that again. Chances are you’ve never actually experienced that. The experience is COMPLETELY focused only on you. Not the patient on the phone. Not the emails coming through. Not the patient walking in trying to pick up glasses. Not the patient trying to butt in with just one quick question. Not the UPS guy. None of it. Just you.

Ok this sounds nice in theory, but does it actually work? We’ve had so many patients say they’ve been searching for eyewear for YEARS! They go into every shop, shops that have thousands of options. They can’t find anything. We show them 20 frames, they’re ready to buy 4 of them. That’s the kind of experience you deserve!

I can’t wear progressives, but I desperately need them.

Yes you can! Framed Eyewear will help you. Hi! I’m Nate. I own Framed. I’d love to educate you about progressives. Jokes are included.

Did you know that I spent 24 years in the industry and so many people have told me they can’t wear them. Do you know how many ACTUALLY couldn’t wear progressives? Less than 1% of the thousands of patients I’ve ever had can’t actually wear them for various reasons. Let’s break it down.

Who needs progressives? Eventually…most people. There are a select few with a lucky prescription that can get away with NEVER wearing them. Typically when you hit 40 years of age, your arm starts stretching to read something. Eventually you run out of arm span. 💪🤳

Why do you need progressives? When you hit the magic age of 40, it all goes downhill. Joking! Your best years are ahead of you. But there’s a lens in your eye that flexes back and forth between distance and reading and eventually it becomes stiff and no longer flexes. So we invented progressives!

What is a progressive? Do you remember those lovely glasses with the line? They’re called bifocals and your grandma and grandpa wore them and you swore up and down you would never? Progressives do much more without a line. It allows you to see distance ranges like for driving and walking around and the movies. It allows you to work for 8 hours straight on the computer and read all those spreadsheets. It allows you to read or play solitaire on your tablet. All without making you look old. 🤓

What are the common complaints with progressives?

I can’t see ANYTHING!

I’m dizzy.

I can’t figure out where to look.

Is the world supposed to be wavy?

I think I’m going to throw up. 🤢

The list goes on.

Why is that?

There are two common reasons why the progressives don’t work for you.

1. You found that elusive $100 progressive at a retailer everyone knows. Amazing! Great deal! But did you know they’re using technology from 30 years ago? Could you work using a computer from that time? I don’t think so. Progressives with current technology should cost anywhere from $400-$1200. Yes…you heard that correctly. Yes…just for the lenses. Trust me, it’s worth it as a fellow progressive wearer. Don’t worry…I’m nowhere near $1200.

2. Your measurements are wrong. To be clear, this is nothing you’ve done wrong. This is a very very very common issue in my industry. 50% of progressives I have come across were measured incorrectly. 50% is WAYYYYY too high of a number. There are a myriad of reasons why that is, but the point is it’s not you.

So who is this lovely lady in the photo? Well she is a wonderful patient of mine. And she told me there’s no way she could wear progressives. She had SUCH a hard time last time and spent a lot of money. Well she actually spent less with me and got a much better product. Now she can drive and read her phone (not at the same time!). Guess how long it took her to get used to them? 2 minutes!

How on earth does Framed Eyewear work?

Well the concept is pretty simple. When we get our haircut, we set an appointment and the hairdresser is only working on our hair. When we go to the doctor, we set an appointment and the doctor is focused on us. When we go to the eye doctor, we set an appointment and the doctor is focused solely on us. When we go out and talk to the optician…why are they hopping between 3 different patients? Are they truly able to give you undivided attention when it is so clearly divided? I can tell you I’ve managed many shops and it is not undivided. Not because the optician isn’t doing their job, they are. But they are stretched quite thin and it’s really hard to stay 100% focused, trust me I’ve done it.

We decided in order to give you the attention that you deserve, the only way is to schedule it by appointment and focus entirely on you (and maybe your family).

1. Make an appointment and show up.

2. Bring your prescription (or not…we can get it later, it does not impact much).

3. We talk for 5-20 minutes depending on what’s needed. We don’t touch or see eyewear until we talk.

4. Once I figure out what your actual needs are, then we can have fun. I will style you in bespoke, custom frames or an independent, customizable line I carry.

5. I get pickier and pickier as we move forward, often times critical of the fit as it needs to be perfect for you. It doesn’t just look amazing, it has to feel amazing or I promise it’s a waste of money.

6. I take a TON of measurements. Depending on the person, I might be taking more measurements than you’ve ever seen.

7. We discuss options for lenses. I’ll be honest, it’s mostly about color changing options. I’ve already made my mind up about your lenses before we started styling frames. Not to worry, there are no hidden up charges here. 🤓

8. I create the frame or I alter them then send it to the lab. In some cases, it can go straight there.

9. Then I call you and we make final tweaks if necessary.

The end! That’s the whole weird process in a nutshell. So if you ever felt you didn’t receive as much attention as this…it’s time to make that appointment.

Do you have a high prescription? You’ll want to work with Framed Eyewear. We specialize in making your high prescription disappear.

I’ve had a lot of patients, this patient was one of the kindest I have ever met. He offered to help me clean up afterwards! We need more people like him.

Anyway, we were dealing with a few things with this pair.

-Large head
-Sensitivity behind the ear
-High prescription

It’s truly unfortunate, but the truth is my industry does not offer eyewear to fit this patient comfortably. Since we make our own eyewear, it’s not a problem for us. This pair fits him like a glove now.

The sensitivity is known as a mastoid bone. We all have it. For some it hurts to put anything on it. And so we have to avoid that area, but eyewear always sits there! So we intentionally designed around it. This pair doesn’t touch back there at all!

Finally we deal with the high prescription. We built up the frame to hide some of it. You’ll also notice we made sure his eyes were as centered as possible. These things made the prescription disappear almost completely. For a -9.50 to stick out 0.50mm is extremely rare.

Something unique about Framed is that we do not charge for hi-index lenses or any material upgrade! We also don’t charge for anti-glare or even tax.

EXTREMELY DURABLE FRAMES

We don’t just do thick acetate frames here. Check this frame out! It’s a lightweight, comfortable frame you can lay around and sleep in! Consider them PJ’s for your face. I sleep in mine every night, eventually I remove them lol.

How durable is it? You can actually take this frame, pull it completely flat, AND hang a 70lb weight on it and leave it like that for years and it won’t break.
