RIP Sugar. Say Hello to Island Native Surf Dog, Cassie. May you surf the Rainbow Bridge together.

Today, our Surf City community is mourning the loss of a true local legend.

Sugar the Surfing Dog, a 5x World Dog Surf Champion, beloved 16-year-old Huntington Beach rescue, and dedicated therapy dog, passed away early this morning after a courageous battle with cancer.

Her owner, Ryan Rustan, shared that Sugar passed peacefully in his arms, surrounded by love.

Sugar wasn’t just a champion on the waves - she was a symbol of joy, resilience, and purpose. From inspiring the surfing world to advocating for rescue dogs and bringing comfort to veterans as a therapy dog, her impact reached far beyond the shoreline.

Thank you, Sugar, for the smiles, the waves, and the legacy you leave behind.

Please vote for our Island Native!

Tomorrow is Election Day! We have come along way since I ran for City Council the first time, as you can see by the contrast in then and now. What has always remained the same is my commitment to making South Padre Island the best possible place for residents and local businesses. I have especially pushed for family focused projects including parks, recreational facilities and opportunities for our kids to be involved in the community. My family is very committed to the arts on SPI with both my wife and daughter participating in several live theater productions. I am also passionate and committed to preserving and showcasing our natural environment and to making sure that our residents’ quality of life is balanced against tourist related activities such as Golf Carts rentals. I believe that more is accomplished by working together to solve issues and that no one member of council or a committee is able to accomplish anything by themselves. Mutual respect and a civil exchange of ideas is how we move forward.

I look forward to seeing you all at the polls tomorrow and I respectfully ask that you vote to return me to Council for another term. I still have work to do!

Happy Thanksgiving to all our friends and neighbors who live in or visit South Padre Island!

We are closed today so that our Island Native family can enjoy Thanksgiving. We will be back tomorrow morning for regular hours.

This year and every year of the 22 years of being in business, I am Thankful for my family, the beauty of our Island home, the community we do business in, our customers, and especially my crew who I consider my Island Native family. Even if you no longer work at Island Native, you are still part of the Island Native family.

Island Native honors and appreciates those who served our great nation. Thank you Veterans!

Today, on Veterans Day, I want to express my appreciation to the brave men and women who serve or have served our nation with courage, honor, and dedication.

I am deeply grateful to all veterans — and especially to the veterans among our City of South Padre Island family — for your service and sacrifice. Your commitment to protecting our freedoms inspires us every day!

Good morning South Padre Island!

Today is the last chance to cast your vote. I have lived on South Padre and owned a family business for over 23 years. I have been a City Councilman for 7 years and served on City committees for 5 years before that. South Padre has a lot of serious projects in process which require attention from someone with experince and knowledge of governement and business. I have a strong record of getting things done while on council and while on committees.

I humbly ask for your vote so that I can continue working to make our Island home the best place to be for the families who live here and for our visitors who drive our economy. Vote for the candidate with experience and integrity who will work for hard for everyone!
