Umoja is a fashion label with a conscience founded by Victoria Hughes. Umoja creates fabulous collections to fashion focused people.

With the belief ‘Fashion is not and never has been about clothes, it’s about people.’(Watson.L,2004) Umoja started to take form. Mixing an everlasting love for fashion and a new found love for the breathtaking country of Tanzania, and its people. Umoja is not totally based on ethical products, and will not display a stereotypical hand crafted style. Being fair trade and helping toward breaking the

cycle of poverty within disadvantaged communities in a developing country is just a bonus. High quality clothes is what will be produced, made in Africa

Starting small but aiming big is what Umoja will do, attempting to help a little in the fight to break the cycle of poverty.

It's Fashion Revolution Week. Here's Josephine's story.... (We meet Josephine when we visited Soko) I have been at SOKO since day one. I was a machinist and now I am the production supervisor.
At SOKO we manufacture different styles of garments which gives us the opportunity to learn more about fashion. I also get a salary which sustains my daily life needs and enables me to look after my family.
Last year I got a scholarship to attend a professional fellowship in the UK for three months. I couldn’t believe it! Spending time in the UK was great, it’s a place where the education is world-class and the skills I developed can be applied anywhere in the world. I stayed in Sheffield which is a friendly and safe city and it’s really convenient to get everything you need. What I liked most about the course was how practical it was - you learnt by doing. It has really helped me in my job at SOKO.

On 24 April 2013, 1,134 people were killed and over 2,500 were injured when the Rana Plaza complex collapsed in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

We believe that 1,134 is too many people to lose from the planet in one factory on one terrible day to not stand up and demand change.

How can you sell jeans at this price? Brilliant article and analysis in The Observer yesterday. The cost of is enormous. When I was in Bangladesh last year, the owner of a jeans factory shook his head and told me it is humanly impossible to produce jeans cheaper than $10 a pair without compromising heavily on ethics.
