This is a great door ornament that usually resides on my Mom's door after Christmas has passed. He is 36" long and about 20" wide. He could hang outdoors in a covered area or inside say on your Mom's apartment door.

Well it has been some time since I posted any activities. So, here is one that I loved, loved, loved making. This piece is a tree skirt that I custom made for a lady to add to her home in Switzerland! One of the things I appreciate about Etsy is the ability we have to share with people globally - Brigitte requested a custom sized, very large skirt for her very large Christmas tree in her and her families home in the Swiss Alps.
To accommodate Brigitte's request, I redesigned my original pattern to a 54" skirt - the design came out just as planned and the results were just beautiful.
If you have a special event, such as a wedding coming up - consider a tree skirt customized with colors, the recipients name and the year. This would be a unique and lifelong gift that they would use every year!

These also reside in the photo album 2018 Custom Tree Skirt

So, the elephants were one side of the gifting. Gail, the recipient of the elephant, and I created this nice warm flower quilt for my Mom. Gail gave it to her this week too! They were just bursting at the seams to trade creations. Warmth and happiness for all! Merry Christmas ladies!!

Everyone Loves Elephants....... Right?

Several years ago I traveled to India, on business, where I visited Elephanta Island (also called Gharapuri Island or place of caves or Pory Island) is one of a number of islands in Mumbai Harbour, east of Mumbai, India. We visited caves with carvings dating back to 600AD.... Imagine something that is that ancient! In addition to several other carvings we saw the elephant headed diety Ganesh. A cheerful elephant headed diety he is the lord of success and the destroyer of evils and obstacles, worshiped as the god of education, wisdom, and wealth. I sort of like this guy. Considering his strong tendency for good and plenty could this be the reason we are noticing an uptic in the popularity of everything elephant?

Anyway, moving right along, it was an amazing trip to a world that I never imagined I would experience.

So back to the pictures... . Here is a cute applique quilt pattern that my Mom and I are making as a lap quilt. Mom has a dear friend who l-o-v-e-s elephants she love the idea of their strength and the symbolism. So, for a Christmas surprise we collaborated to make this nice 45 x 60ish lap quilt for this special friend. The theme is perfect and we are certain it will warm and comfort her for some time.

Shhhh its a secret!

Oh, and check out the fleece that will back this beauty! Yes indeed, it is elephant fleece and guaranteed to be warm and comfy.

Then next step, quilting this cutie - I'm thinking that I am going to quilt paisleys and maybe some swirls just to continue with the whimsical look and feel.

What a warm an loving gift for someone!

You know, anyone can create applique quilts like this - the hardest part is choosing your colors! If you have a group that would like to learn, let me know - it could be a fun and rewarding adventure!

The Christopher Heights Bazaar was a wonderful success raising about $2,000 for the non-profit Residents Council. The quilt raised more than $700. For the cause and was one by Judy, a weekend nurse at CH. Judy wanted the quilt sooooo much, as did others, but we are happy to know it is going to a nice new home. Congratulations Judy!

Another project that is underway is an applique quilt for my daughter Hillary and her husband Brad. Hillary and Brad will be moving into a new home in early 2019 and have requested something special for the master bedroom. I think this will suit the request and if I do say so... is looking pretty darn good. The pattern is a William Morris appliqué pattern designed by Michele Hill and I love it. This is one of those items that really looks nice in my master bedroom...... hmmmmm.

I will be sharing the process I used to create this beauty in the coming weeks. BTW this is the same process I use with my senior ladies!

Oh my, I just finished writing a super cool post and..... it vanished! Note to self write them and save in draft!

Well, even without losing my post it was a busy week. For the last 2 years I have been volunteering my time and skills at the assisted living facility where my Mom resides. The facility, Christopher Heights of Northampton is located on the old State Hospital grounds off Rte 66 in Northampton. CH is 3 years old next month and is just lovely.

Back to my activities. Every other Thursday I work with people at CH on fiber arts projects. We have made pillows, wall hangings, door hangings a quilt that was raffled last year and another quilt this year to be raffled at the annual bazaar on November 3rd.

The process that we use is primarily applique. The ladies in the group, the men seem resistant to attend, create items for themselves or in these instances items for the bazaar. This year we have 12 pillows that will be sold and another quilt. Our quilt, a combination of 24 applique block and 24 pieced blocks uses Mrs. Lincoln's Sampler Quilt pattern by Lori Smith as the basis. Since we wanted to make a large quilt, the pieced patterns and applique patterns were modified in order for us to attain a quilt that is a generous 70" x 90". It definitely fits a twin and is quite lovely on a full size bed.
This year, we opted to create a quilt that is pretty much gender neutral and could either be used as a bed quilt of bedspread. It is made of cotton fabrics and has an 80/20 batting. Applique work was completed by the ladies, most are in the picture around the quilt top and pieced blocks by Sally-Anne. Assembly and free motion quilting was accomplished in my home studio using a KingQuilter longarm on a Gracie King frame.

Raffle tickets are available and will continue to be available until the drawing on November 3rd. You can purchase tickets for 1 - $5 or 3 - $10. It may not be a billion dollars but it will last a lifetime!

Stop in to check out the bazaar and visit the facility. All proceeds will go to the CH Residents Council for funding of activities, projects or special events that the residents would like to do on their own.

Check out the pictures of my Mom and my lady friends as they create beautiful items for themselves and our special projects.

Next year.... we will be creating two baby quilts using William Morris Applique designs by Michele Hill. Once we are through the holidays and our gift projects we will probably begin he quilts.

If you have any questions or would like to
see how this type of project could benefit your group reach out and we can talk. I have a process that virtually guarantees success and would be happy to work with you.
