-DKA and Euglycemic DKA are possible complications, which makes ketone monitoring critical. This was most common within the first week of treatment during trials and is the reason there are more initial ketone checks.
-If there is a clinical concern for DKA, DVM can screen for ketonuria, measure serum ketones using urine ketone stick, or measure beta-
hydroxybutyrate with a handheld blood ketone monitor; BHB >2.4 mmol/L prompts discontinuing Senvelgo.
Note: Idexx reports BHB as mg/dL and should be converted to mmol/L (mg/dl / 10.3 = mmol/L) for interpretation.
- Initial mild weight loss is not uncommon. If does not improve or stabilize within 7 days, then evaluate for concurrent disease.
- Due to lack of evidence, the AAHA task force recommend keeping cats on SGLT2 inhibitors on their regular diet. Can be transitioned to a DM
diet once considered regulated.
- Osmotic diarrhea is a common side effect of medication. Consider starting a high-fiber diet vs. reducing medication by 25%.
Adopter/placement counseling: This cat should immediately establish a relationship with a primary care veterinarian. During treatment with an SGLT2 inhibitor for diabetes mellitus, consistent bloodwork and veterinary relationship (every 3-4 months) is recommended. Behavior toward cats: Skittle did not live with any cats in the most recent home; however, in the previous home, Skittle lived with 6 other cats, both male and female, from 3-6 years old. He is very tolerant of them and is somewhat rough when playing with them.
Behavior toward dogs: Skittle did not live with any dogs in the most recent home; however, in the previous home, Skittle spent time with a small mixed breed dog and he was very tolerant of him.

Juno made eye contact when spoken to and he remained in front of his kennel as the cage door opened. Juno allowed all petting while leaning in, purring, looking at the assessor with a soft expression and keeping his tail high in the air. Juno remained calm when lifted and placed back down.
