During the pandemic, I sewed and donated thousands of masks for my community. They ended up in the VA nursing home for residents and staff, our public libraries for patrons free of charge, and largely in my local school district.

I asked my neighbors and friends to clean out their craft spaces for fabric they were no longer using. As a token of my thanks, they received masks for their families free of charge. I never turned a profit, and any money given to me was used to purchase needles, thread, elastic and fabric for more masks.

Fast forward to today.

To keep from doomscrolling in the evening, I’ve been knitting these red hats. A few have been purchased and sent in my community. After consulting with a friend in Minneapolis, the proceeds from these hats have been donated to Colectiva Bilingüe- Minneapolis Bilingual Education Collective for their rent relief program.

I managed to pick up some more red yarn so I have enough for about 4 or 5 more hats. Please PM me if you would like to reserve a spot for a hat. It takes aabouf two rvebings for me to stitch one up. Suggested donation is $35, to cover the cost of yarn, credit card fees and shipping, plus a $20 donation to the organization above. The actual cost of shipping and yarn is roughly $15, so if thats all you can manage, we can work something out.

February 26th is Red Hat Day.

I have a tiny platform and an even tinier reach.

I have a hobby business.

Even so, in case there’s any doubt about where I stand on things…

I’m the granddaughter of immigrants.

I taught immigrants.

I love my neighbors. All of my neigbors.

I believe all people are made in the image of God.

I believe in welcoming the foreigner and sojourner.

My faith tradition says God’s laws are higher than any nation’s, and we are to call out injustice when a country’s laws and leaders are unjust.

So even though my business is small, I stand behind my beliefs. Because even when every scrap of fabric is sewn, all the hand-me-downs outgrown, all the alterations complete, my integrity and devotion to Christ and neighbor will still remain.

I was just in the self-checkout line at Target, and was wearing my “Not Your Coffee Shop Chai” shirt. The worker there asked me about my shirt, so I started explaining about my business.

From the other side of me, out of the blue, the nicest lady emphatically exclaimed, “you should get some! I absolutely love Midwest Chai! I drink mine all the time! (or something like that; honestly I was so blown away by the random public endorsement that I think I blacked out from shock for a second) The worker asked for a card and said she had multiple friends she was going to tell about Midwest Chai to.

The other lady said a few other lovely things, including that when she isn’t feeling well or is cold that she craves my chai, and when I told her I was doing this full-time now, she said, “Keep Going!”
