Meet Viola-Voila by Oneida Community Stainless. A beautifully detailed pierced pattern introduced in 1991 that brought a little elegance to everyday tables. The ornate scrollwork and floral-inspired design gave stainless steel flatware a much more formal, almost heirloom feel without the upkeep of silverplate.
1991 also happens to be the year I graduated from high school, which means this pattern turns 35 years old this year right along with that season of life. And honestly, it’s weird to think about anything this age being considered “vintage.” 😆
Back then, gas averaged around $1.14 a gallon, “Beauty and the Beast” was in theaters, families gathered around TVs for shows like Home Improvement and Roseanne, and cassette tapes were blasting songs from artists like Bryan Adams, Garth Brooks, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey. Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” hit the airwaves that year, boys everywhere smelled like Drakkar Noir, and if you were lucky, your family had a camcorder the size of a microwave recording birthdays and holidays onto VHS tapes.
Kitchen tables still served as the heart of the home. Supper together mattered. Recipes were handwritten on index cards. Kids rode bikes until the streetlights came on. And a pretty table setting still felt like something special, even on an ordinary Tuesday night.
This pattern feels like it came from that era beautifully. Detailed. Decorative. Meant to be seen and enjoyed instead of hidden away in a drawer.
Now these pieces are getting a Second Turn at a new life, transformed by hand from vintage flatware into wearable pieces that carry both history and story forward. There’s something really special about taking a pattern that once sat around a family table and giving it an entirely new purpose decades later.
I have personally never come across this pattern out in the wild before. The only reason I even recognized it was because I’ve seen other silverware benders get excited when they find it. It’s also very rare for me to bend stainless steel because it is so much harder to work with than silverplate, and this pattern absolutely lived up to that reputation. It fought me every step of the way and took an exceptionally long time to bend because of how incredibly unmoving it was. But honestly, the detail was worth every bit of the battle.
