Very excited to announce that for 2024, Not Donuts will present OFF THE RECORD, an exhibition organized by Natalie Beall and Pierre Le Hors. Taking cues from 1980s DIY culture—the heyday of mixtapes and fanzines—the exhibition seeks to draw connections among New York and Hudson Valley-based artists whose work has a kinship with sound and the printed page.

Each artist has been asked to contribute an artwork, a publication, and a record, to be displayed non-hierarchically on pegboard walls with site-specific hanging hardware designed by Natalie Beall. The included records will be played continuously for the duration of the show, and a printed zine serving as catalog will be available to the public. Participating artists include , , , , Joshua Marsh, , , Brent Owens, , , and Michelle Rosenberg.

Coming up on Saturday April 20th (which is 4.20💨and also Record Store Day), musician/composer and friend of the shop Max Gude will host “Dias Futuros,” a travel vinyl listening party. Max recently went to Buenos Aires to score a movie and, like any respectable music head, spent a significant part of his trip hitting record stores and flea markets in search of interesting records. Come hang out, have a Fernet con Coca and listen to his finds and what he learned about Argentina and it’s music. Should be a good time, and hopefully the first of an ongoing series. 6-10pm, and refreshments will be served.

For new releases, reissues and restocks this week, we have two beautiful Ethiopian releases. “Souvenirs” by Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru compiles songs recorded between 1977 and 1985, and is the first to feature Gebru’s heartfelt vocals, which follow and compliment perfectly her delicate piano melodies. And “Beauties” by Asselefech Ashine and Getenesh Kebret with Army Band is a reissue of a unique album from 1976 that finds the two female singers floating above the band’s tight yet loose Ethio-Jazz sounds. Both highly recommended.

Some of the choice selections coming to the shop tomorrow. Center square is Harlem River Drive, a rare 1971 funk/soul/Latin/jazz record; this copy is a very clean promo. Below is Grant Green’s killer 1970 jazz-funk outing featuring Ronnie Foster on organ and Idris Muhammad on drums. And Pacific is a one-of-a-kind Japanese explosion of sound by Hosono et al. from 1978; clean og press with poster/insert. Dm/text/call with any questions or come in Sat. or Sun. 11-6.

Cleaned up and ready to roll this morning after another amazing mixtape party last night. Thanks as always to and to everyone who came out and participated. You really brought it! Can’t wait to hear the tape, which will be available to stream soon. The shop is open today 11-6; closed tomorrow, but I should be around for appointments if anyone wants to pop in. Just LMK.

While others might be thinking about end zones, the shop is a designated chillout zone right now, thanks to two “banger” electronic/ambient/environmental reissues in this week—Microstoria’s “init ding + _snd” and Hiroshi Yoshimura’s “Surround.” Open today 11-6.

Business as usual at Not Donuts today. So for those who have no plans, stop by 11-6. And for the record, I frickin’ love this song and Taxi. Best sitcom ever.
