Finland’s libraries are expanding their role by lending out sewing machines, giving people the tools to repair clothes instead of discarding them. Alongside books, visitors can borrow equipment or use in-house machines to fix torn fabric, adjust sizes, or refresh older garments.

The idea makes repair more accessible. Not everyone owns a sewing machine or has space for one, but a shared library resource removes that barrier. It also encourages people to learn basic skills, helping them extend the life of what they already have.

More than a service, this reflects a shift toward practical sustainability. By supporting repair over replacement, libraries help reduce textile waste while empowering communities to reuse and create.

The baste fit is the foundation of the piece, where proportion, structure, and movement are sculpted through couture techniques, bespoke tailoring, and freehand craftsmanship. These are the first steps of the hundreds of handcrafted flowers still to come. The justaucorps will eventually be engulfed in leather flowers.

Being an artist was not seen as a realistic ambition as a school leaver. Instead I followed a rewarding career in health care specialising in neuro-oncology and then palliative care. Art was always a hobby, but I could not imagine it would become my life.
