Once upon a time in Karachi

Unknown shopping district in Karachi with banners advertising local clothing stores and tailors.

All cities have their commercial centres and Karachi is no exception. The British, European and Indian banks, insurance companies and other houses of commerce were housed in McLeod Road. But for shopping there was Empress Market, Bhori Bazaar, Victoria Road and Elphinstone Street — all located in Saddar.

Pakistani girls going to school in unknown rural area during 1960s.

Pakistan has made significant progress for girls' education in the last decade — but 12 millions girls are out of school, with only 13% of girls reaching grade nine.

Pakistan was described as “among the world’s worst performing countries in education,” at the 2015 Oslo Summit on Education and Development.

Across all provinces generation after generation of children, especially girls, are locked out of education—and into poverty. In interviews for Human Rights Watch report, girls talked again and again about their desire for education, their wish to “be someone,” and how these dreams had been crushed by being unable to study.

Lack of access to education for girls is part of a broader landscape of gender inequality in Pakistan. The country has one of Asia’s highest rates of maternal mortality. Violence against women and girls—including r**e, so-called “honor” killings and violence, acid attacks, domestic violence, forced marriage and child marriage—is a serious problem, and government responses are inadequate.

Among the factors keeping girls out of school, Human Rights Watch found, are the government’s under-investment in schools, lack of schools, prohibitive school fees and related costs, corporal punishment, and a failure to enforce compulsory education.

Ottoman fashion is the style and design of clothing worn during the Ottoman Empire.

Given the ardency for cultural development and growth during the Ottoman Empire's heyday, it's no surprise that some aspects of its history continue to inspire Turkish artists, chefs, and designers to this day. We look at the history of Ottoman clothing – from the sultan's garments to the clothing worn by women of the court – for a small glimpse of those imperious days.

During the 16th century, the Ottoman Empire reached a peak of economic and political power. As such, the textile industry also witnessed a boom, with weaving techniques and the quality of fabrics at their pinnacle. Of course, the sultans would have nothing less than luxurious kaftans composed of the most expensive fabrics with gold- or silver-plated threads. Special workshops designed court apparel and furnishings to supply the substantial demand, sometimes even placing orders to other workshops in Istanbul and Bursa to meet the high demand.

The stunning sultan kaftans (worn with şalvar, loose trousers) were made of fabrics such as brocade, velvet, satin and silk lampas, taffeta, mohair, and cashmere. International influence also played a significant role, with various cloths ordered from renowned Italian weaving centers in Venice, Genoa, and Florence and diplomatic gifts from textile-rich countries such as Iran, India, and China.

Anarkali is a great story by Pakistani drama writer Syed Imtiaz Ali Taj. It is about the history of Anaarkali, a dancing girl in the courtyard of Jalaluddin Akbar.

British travelers William Finch and Edward Terry wrote the earliest Western accounts of the sexual relationship between Salim and Anarkali.

Finch reached Lahore in February 1611, 11 years after the supposed death of Anarkali, to sell indigo he had purchased at Bayana on behalf of the East India Company. His account, written in early 17th-century English, gives the following information.
