Welcome to Buttonwood.shop! As we find ourselves making new friends, it felt like a good time to share a little backstory…

Three years ago, I opened a little retail gift shop in my small downtown—because who doesn’t want amazon alternatives? I knew I’d be lucky to break even, but it was about purpose over profit. I surrounded myself with a curated collection of independent, hand-made goods, and the inspiration worked.

By “worked,” it wasn’t exactly in the way I’d expected. It worked because It pushed me to begin creating for myself. It became harder to remain interested in working for other people. (Meanwhile, my remote job was inevitably on the chopping block because AI is a decent copywriter.)

At the time I didn’t know that my life would be shifting direction, too. I didn’t expect to part ways with my husband of almost 20 years. Buttonwood Shop was the fork in the road, and it’s the point (though not the reason) we began to walk different paths. I can understand how onlookers perceive my directional change as going astray. But funny enough, I’ve actually wound my way back onto an old, familiar trail. One I never meant to leave. One that supports the life I always imagined.

That’s when I met my partner, Eric (Piney), walking the same road. We fell into step, fell into love, and in-between a lot of important moments and developments, I watched Buttonwood grow. Truth is, one strong mind can get an idea off the ground. Two strong minds keep it afloat. We started a collection of our own offerings, which quickly became the majority of our inventory.

Math doesn’t lie, and this winter proved our retail location was hindering, not helping our success. We closed the retail space and began making our goods in our home studio in Sutton, NH. We’ve got a small line-up of summer markets locked in, and more in the making!

The true heart of our story is this: We have built a business that supports our lifestyle, just as much as we’ve built a lifestyle that supports our business. This right here is why dreams and reality are one and the same. It is all possible, though not without rock-solid alignment between the life you want to live, and the work you want to do. ❤️

✨🌲NEW!🌲✨
Very proud to share Buttonwood’s newest offering: Evergreen Seasons. This collection of essential oils carries you through the woods through four seasonally-inspired, forest-forward blends; spring, summer, autumn and winter! Sold as a full set or individually. 🌲🌸☀️🍂❄️🌲

Ever since closed her essential oils business last year, I’ve been looking for the right replacement. One thing led to the next, and now Buttonwood is crafting our own! My favorite is Evergreen Spring because patchouli. But Autumn is starting to earn special favor, and Summer is so very uplifting…

Feeling happy- It’s been a truly successful weekend at our first event of the market season! 💕

A favorite at Brimfield this weekend: Stone pendants for simple people. ☺️ Yes, perhaps “just” a rock. But, a rock that’s been …

…washed by the ocean for an eternity
…selected amongst millions of similar nature
…run through a tumbler to smooth the last few points of roughness
…coated in beeswax to retain its luster
…drilled with a diamond bit to produce a hole
…laced with a mink-oiled leather cord
…tagged with a little story about why it’s special
…boxed for appropriate presentation for a loved one.

Maybe it’s not just a rock. :)

🧵 Patch production is in full swing as we prep four our first fair of the season: Brimfield North at the Hopkinton Fairgrounds on Memorial Day weekend!!!

Vintage wool + are turned into one-of-a-kind patches that I affix to garment dyed ball caps. 🧢 ☺️ I’m having so much fun playing with these beautiful materials.

Bird stickers…🦉💕

In between moving the shop and preparing for our summer fair plans, I’ve been working on a few new stickers! Barn Owl has been printed, Lady Cardinal is next. 😊

And that’s a wrap.

Heartfelt thanks to the folks who’ve kept Buttonwood on the map these last few years! So thankful for anyone and everyone who has had a hand in the good energy of 11 E Main. It’s a blessed space: I can’t wait to see where it goes next!

Our closing sale + Valentine’s Day brought so many folks in to the shop last week. It reminded us how much we love interacting with people! Im so glad we’ll be freed up to join many fairs and markets when the weather warms up. :)

We’re entering week two of 40% off everything we don’t make ourselves. Pictured here are some of the things we do make. It’s been such a positive evolution, but I will truly miss the good energy of 11 E Main st. 🥰

NEWS!!!!
It’s time for another Buttonwood Evolution.
I’m here to share that we will cease to be a brick-and-mortar shop at the end of this month (February). (*Yes, there will be a closing sale, if that’s important to you!)

And: Yes, I have a lot of strong feelings about it: but they are 100% positive.
Buttonwood began because I wanted to escape the zombie mode I’d fallen into. I didn’t want a meaningless job that consumed the majority of my waking hours. It was a huge stepping stone to bring me away from “the grind” and closer to what I would call a life of purpose.

Along this portion of the journey…
-I discovered my love of curation.
-I reconnected with parts of myself that I’d failed to make time for.
-I found a new partner in life that reflects my beliefs that success and dollars are not synonymous; that resourcefulness is more alluring than resources.
-I lost my mom, and discovered that where her creation ended, mine began.

Now, it’s time to go where the people are. Buttonwood will be shifting away from the storefront in order to open ourselves up for fairs/festivals/events. Our studio is moving home, and our rent budget is moving to cover materials for new products… which I’m so absolutely thrilled to share soon! Please continue to follow Buttonwood, as our collection of handcrafted goods is growing and will include something entirely new. Stay tuned for that announcement!

Be on the lookout for CLOSING SALE dates soon. It’s been a pleasure to feature an incredible selection of independent artists and makers. I am appreciative of the role these special folks have played in Buttonwoods evolution.

PICS: (1) The seedling I planted last May, on Mother’s Day. It’s a new Buttonwood tree, nourished by my late Mum’s ashes. I think it’s a beautiful symbol of this very evolution. (2) Just before the recent big snow, I protected it in a tomato cage and spangled it in stars… I know she would have liked that. She was always worried about being forgotten. I can say clearly that Buttonwood would not have existed without her in my life, and it’s a very strong reminder of her, every day. :)

Merry Christmas/Holidays from Buttonwood!

This was a big year, where “I” became “we”, and we created a true studio behind the shop. Now, about 30% of our offerings are our own creations under the “Snail & Piney” label, with more in the works. Meanwhile, our core artisans help keep the shop alive with products that always move. We are so thankful for the opportunity to support and feature brands like , , , , .handcrafts and many more.

Truth is, a traditional retail business can’t easily make it in today’s world, no matter how much we all intend to “shop small.” There must be a twist. We are in that twist phase now and I’m hopeful that it works!

Cheers to everyone! We are off for the holiday and will return to the shop Jan 7th. 🥳
