The mental health problem in the Army is a common problem and a serious issue that affects many service members and veterans. Between 2016 and 2020, more than 450,000 active component service members were diagnosed with at least one mental health disorder, such as adjustment disorder, anxiety, depression, or PTSD. Additionally, many Soldiers experience mental health conditions that lead to su***de. This is also a rising problem in compo 3 (Army Reserves). Compo 3 Soldiers are not entitled to the same benefits as compo 1 (Active Army) and we are seeing a rise in su***de within our formations.
There are several reasons why physical activity can be good for psychological well-being:
• Exercise decreases stress hormones. Exercise decreases stress hormones like cortisol.
• Physical activity distracts you from negative thoughts and emotions.
• Exercise promotes confidence.
• Exercise can be a good source of social support.
• Better physical health may mean better mental health.
• Exercise provides a buffer against stress.
As an organization our most valuable assist is our Soldiers. I have been working with some of my Soldiers to produce music to promote fitness. My goal is to promote fitness within the military community by using my platform not only as a Senior Leader but also as an International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness Professional (IFBB Pro). To include giving our Soldiers an opportunity to showcase their talents.
Music is a universal language, and we are focus on improving the mental health of our Soldiers through music and fitness, by developing consistent physical activity habits that will help improve mental health and ideally protect against negative mental health outcomes such as drug overdoses and su***des. Our music is geared towards fitness and motivation, with the focus on our service members mental health.
