Thursdays Are For Poetry

Thursdays Are For Poetry "Thursdays Are For Poetry at The Teaneck General Store" showcases the work of a FEATURED POET followed by a discussion and open mic. Contact us.

Thursdays Are For Poetry" is a new series in Teaneck that provides an opportunity for established and up and coming poets to read their work in a comfortable environment. A lively discussion with the poet is a major focus of the evening and provides a chance to probe the poet's work with supportive and challenging insights. An open mic follows the general reading. We are looking for high quality poets to expand our series.

WALT WHITMAN COMES TO TEANECK
—and you are he!

THURSDAYS ARE FOR POETRY
featured poet:
EVERYBODY AS WALT WHITMAN

Thursday Night, October 17

Here is how it works.
Everyone will be given a complete text of the 1882 edition of “Song of Myself.”
We will read in the round. When your turn comes, you read aloud until you want to stop.

Readers and listeners may call out one of three things during the “service”:
1. You may shout, “Wow!”
2. You may shout, “Somebody actually said that?”
3. You may shout the word or phrase or line that you just heard that you can’t resist repeating.

Otherwise, the only sound in the room will be the sound our voices reading Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself to ourselves. Aloud. Yes, read the lines on the page as if you were reading them to yourself for the first time, with the rest of us tenderly eavesdropping on your discoveries. Don’t act. Read.

Zev Shanken has held this event in his college and adult ed courses. It is a powerful way to ‘get’ Walt Whitman. A memorable poetic-spiritual-dramatic experience will materialize in the ears and minds of all who attend this special event in the monthly THURSDAYS ARE FOR POETRY reading series.

Please join Alice Twombly and Zev Shanken THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17, AT CQ for this open, informal and inspiring program of poetry, democracy and soul. (RSVP appreciated but not required so we will know approximately how many copies of 1882 edition of “Song of Myself” to run off.)
