Somalian States (the Kingdom Of Punt In the bible) were trade partners with Egypt as early as 3,000 BC. Frankincense was used continuously in religious ceremonies during 4,500bc - 300 Bc (during the hegemonies of Ta-Seti , Upper Egypt, then the United Egypt). Due to inter-regional trade and then eventually conquest by Assyria, then Alexander the Great (the Greek), then the Romans under Augustus, use of perfumes (in the ancient world called called something closed to spices and aromas), became more widespread in the Middle East. When Rome collapsed in the 4th-5th century, use of perfumes in Europe declined and remained an art of Levant until the crusades. After returning crusaders brought samples to Europe it got adopted by the royal families as a prestige good. It stayed a prestige good of the elite until the scientific discoveries in chemistry enabling the production of synthetic substitutes and dilution.
