A recent online article from Country Living Magazine highlights a trending design aesthetic that we vintage shoppers lovingly embrace but haven’t quite been able to pin point with a name. We’ve seen Rustic, Shabby Chic, BoHo, MCM, Industrial, Cottage Core, even folklectic and grandmillennial, just to name a few, over the years. But this is the most inclusive and exciting of them all! Are you ready? Drum roll please...
The “ECCENTRIC AUNT”
(And no, you don’t have to be an aunt or even a woman to appreciate this one- but let’s just go with it!)
This aesthetic embraces imperfection, whimsy and curated clutter! It gives us permission to play, create, explore and mix & match almost all of the other styles together into a big beautiful explosion of personality. Gone are the uninspired days of minimalism and “milennial grey” dwellings. Say “Hello” to vibrant colors and patterns, patina, quirky collectibles and decor that ignites conversations!
In the past, this style may have been misinterpreted or misunderstood as messy or kitsch.
Past minimalist trends may have even imposed an underlying guilt upon colorful collectors of all ages for having too many “things.” But not anymore!
While the full on version of the eccentric aunt aesthetic may not be for everyone—and some of us may have to actually “edit” our selections to avoid being a “hoarding aunt”—I suspect that most people long for a little personality and charm in their spaces!
