TOWEL DAY is celebrated every year on May 25th by fans of Douglas Adams, the author of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy*.
It started in 2001, just two weeks after Adams passed away, as a way for fans to honor his life and work.

WHY A TOWEL? In the book, a towel is described as the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. It has practical value (warmth, wrapping up, defense) and immense psychological value to non-hitchhikers.

HOW TO CELEBRATE: Fans carry a towel with them all day—to work, school, or out running errands—as a badge of honor.
