It's National Dog Day!

National Dog Day was first established in 2004 by pet & family lifestyle advocate Colleen Paige. The aim of promoting this day is to raise awareness about adopting animals currently in rescue centers. It promotes dog ownership of all breeds, pure and mixed.

Obon (お盆) is an annual Japanese holiday commemorating and remembering deceased ancestors. Their spirits are believed to return at this time to visit their relatives. Chochin (paper) lanterns are hung to guide the spirits, Obon dances (bon odori) are performed, families have reunions, visit their relatives' graves, and make food offerings at altars and temples. In recent years, floating lanterns (toro nagashi) have become popular. The beautiful lanterns float down a river to the sea, symbolically sending their ancestors’ spirits into the sky. Customs vary from region to region.

First created in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) to shine a light on cat welfare and encourage adoption, this day has become a global celebration of our favorite feline friends. Since 2020, the UK-based charity International Cat Care has taken custodianship of the holiday, furthering its mission to promote health, welfare, and cat-friendly practices worldwide.

With an estimated 500–600 million cats living globally—both as pets and strays—International Cat Day is a powerful reminder to support initiatives like spaying/neutering, Trap–Neuter–Return (TNR) programs, adoption drives, and proper veterinary care for all cats.

So today, whether you’re spoiling your own cat with extra love, donating to your local shelter, volunteering, or spreading knowledge online—you're helping create a better world for cats everywhere. 💕
