Key Facts About Early Baseball Gloves

Early Usage (1860s-1870s): Amateur players and catchers, such as Doug Allison in 1870, began using modified work gloves to reduce the pain from catching fastballs.
First Recorded Use (1875): St. Louis Brown Stockings first baseman Charles C. Waitt wore a flesh-colored, thin leather glove to avoid ridicule for needing protection.
Initial Design: Early gloves were often fingerless or repurposed driving gloves, designed more for padding against impact than for catching.
Evolution: Through the 1880s and 1890s, they grew in size and padding, evolving from mere hand protection to essential, specialized fielding equipment.
While some early players were mocked for using them, the increased speed of the game in the late 19th century made gloves a necessity for player safety.
Tennessee Tanning Company has been taninng alum lace leather since 1979. We make the best and strongest laces in many colors. 3/16" and 1/4" x 72" Rawlings Gloves are made with the best perfection for best protection!
