At Greenwood Rising, we are privileged to share these stories, preserve this history, and create spaces where learning, reflection, and community can thrive. Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is a journey—one built on the determination of those who came before us and carried forward by each generation that follows.

Today, 161 years later, we celebrate not only freedom from slavery, but the legacy that lives on through the stories we share, the communities we build, and the hope we carry forward for future generations.

Tonight at Greenwood Rising, we are honored to welcome author and broadcast journalist Carmen Fields for a special evening of storytelling, history, and reflection.

In her powerful book, Carmen shares the remarkable story of her father, renowned jazz musician Ernie Fields, preserving his legacy and the impact of music, culture, and perseverance across generations.

It is a true privilege to host Carmen in Tulsa and to celebrate the deep connections between her family’s story and the rich history we explore every day at Greenwood Rising. Having Ernie Fields’ story represented in our History Center as part of Tulsa’s deep cultural roots makes this evening even more meaningful.

One week ago, our community gathered in remembrance, reflection, and unity. As we look back on that meaningful evening, we honor the lives lost during the Tulsa Race Massacre while also celebrating the enduring spirit of Greenwood. For 105 years, the legacy of resilience, courage, and hope has continued to inspire generations and remind us that Greenwood's story is one of both tragedy and triumph.

As the sun set and candles illuminated the evening sky, neighbors, families, and friends gathered in a shared moment of remembrance and reflection. Each candle represented more than a light—it symbolized unity, resilience, and our collective commitment to preserving the legacy of Greenwood.

Moments like these remind us why we do this work. We honor the past, celebrate the strength of those who rebuilt, and ensure that the story of Greenwood is never forgotten.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us, stood beside a neighbor, lit a candle, and helped carry forward the spirit of remembrance and community. Together, we continue to keep the legacy of Greenwood alive.

Today, we remember the Tulsa Race Massacre and the destruction of Greenwood, a thriving community known as Black Wall Street.

For many years, the story of what happened in Tulsa was left out of classrooms, history books and public conversations. Organizations like Greenwood Rising are helping keep this history alive by sharing it with new generations.

Road to Remembrance: Two Cities, One Mission is an annual partnership between Greenwood Rising and the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum that brings students to both sites to learn about two defining moments in Oklahoma history and the lessons they still carry today. The program will return this fall for a new school year.

At Greenwood Rising, we will host a candlelight vigil on May 31st at 8:00 PM to honor the lives lost in the massacre 105 years ago.

We invite our community to join us in a moment of silence as we reflect, remember, and stand together in unity. This gathering is a time to honor the resilience of survivors and descendants, and to continue preserving and sharing the truth of the history of Black Wall Street.

We are honored to be joined by our Mayor and descendants of the Greenwood community as we come together in remembrance and solidarity.

May this vigil serve as a reminder that while we carry this history with us, so too do we carry strength, hope, and a commitment to ensuring Greenwood’s legacy is never forgotten
