The difference between top-grain and full grain leather is that top-grain leather is where the craftsmen take the leather and applies it on top of another material. Whereas, full-grain leather is the whole of the leather rather than just the leather being placed atop another layer of leather or material.
In essence, it is the whole piece of leather that is being used to create the leather product. The full grain leather is more expensive because of this feature. It is the most sought after of the leather products out there for luxury items. The more expensive the item is, the more that is generally put into the work using “true application“ in the process.
In other words, you’re buying a genuine leather product through and through with no fillers or additives. top grain leather is still great leather! However, it will not be as expensive as full grain leather due to the processes used to make the item.
To give clarity and a better understanding, we can look out the designer brand Hermès as an example. Hermès uses four grain leather in their handbags. Not only is it their craftsmanship and their great legacy and story, it is the attention to detail that makes their bags so special. Every bag that they produce, they use full grain leather. Hence, this is what justifies the value in their products and why there is such a waiting list! It has to do with the quality and the craftsmanship that they put in every single piece.
