With our new acrylic unit block sets, kids are finding all kinds of new ways to build and explore!

Children can now build well-balanced, mathematical structures that not only encourage exploration with gravity, but also consider the position of a sunbeam to refract light through windows. They can explore how colors mix, and how they bend and change when acrylic blocks are stacked or layered together. They can experiment with a familiar play tool in new ways with blocks that have window-like openings and countless possibilities.

You might not know the name Caroline Pratt, but if youโ€™ve ever watched a kid deep in play with a set of unit blocks, youโ€™ve seen her legacy in action.

In the early 1900s, Pratt designed and built the very first standard unit blocks for her own school, and theyโ€™ve been a cornerstone of early childhood classrooms ever since.

She was a constructivist through and through, which means she believed kids build real understanding by reconstructing the world around them through play.

Her original blocks were mathematical, open-ended, and totally child-directed, and over 100 years later, her design lives on - why mess with perfection?
