I love leather. Always have pretty much. Just recently I realized...maybe I can try making stuff out of leather too?? Why not, right? So I did....and I LOVED doing it! The feeling of doing something totally by hand and the end result being something that is useful, beautiful, artistic, expressive and sturdy/long-lasting was just a perfect fit for my personality! Making leather products 100% by hand has got to be one of the more satisfying things I’ve tried in life for sure. So...why “HERD” then? A few reasons...
A HERD. A TRIBE. A CREW. A FAMILY. We all have our people that we run with don’t we? Well, mine include my beautiful wife, Shelley, and my three boys Jace, Truitt and Bennett. They are my HERD. The idea of making something with my own two hands for them that represents us as a family makes my heart sing. I want to make my boys a knife sheath that they wear when they are 90 years old. I want to make my wife a little bag that she carries for the rest of our marriage. I want to create long-lasting things for my HERD!
I have started getting into the leather community and have found it to be very welcoming and very friendly. People that love leather are cut from the same hide (see what I did there??). As cheesy as it may sound...it feels like I’m joining a HERD here haha!
This is the more serious note. My buddy, Jeremy, shared an article with me recently about this idea of the HERD mentality of society. That our lives can so easily become this thing that we sort of live out in a certain manner...which just so happens to be the same manner as everyone else in the HERD! No real thought or uniqueness to it...just being drug downstream by the flow of the HERD. The guy that wrote this article wanted out of the HERD. God created us all uniquely...and I think that’s special. Do you ever just feel like “another day at the job” or “just another phone call or email”? Well, HERD Leather Co. is one of my ways to help myself get out of the HERD a bit and do something that provides me with an outlet to be who God made me to be. To express and create. To keep life vibrant and ever-changing so it doesn't become stagnant. Every time I say or see the name of this little company...I am reminded of the heart behind it.
