🚨 Whatnot really said: “You sure you don’t want to follow them? You’ve been lurking for a while…” 🤣 The new Whatnot suggestion feature has me crying. Apparently now it’ll tell you to follow a seller and casually remind you exactly how many times you’ve watched their show.

“Watched 37 times”
Thirty-seven?! 😭 That’s not a viewer anymore, that’s a part-time employee.

Whatnot is out here exposing all of us:
• “Just checking in” = watched 12 times
• “I’m waiting for the right item” = watched 24 times
• “I don’t want to follow too many people” = watched 37 times
• “I swear this is my first time here” = watched 83 times 👀

One of the worst things you can do when trying to build a successful business is copy what you see someone else doing. It’s easy to watch another seller and think, “If I do exactly what they’re doing, I’ll get the same results.” But what you don’t see are the details behind the scenes. You don’t know their cost of goods, their profit margins, how long they’ve been building their audience, what inventory they have access to, or what their long-term strategy is. What works for one seller may not work for another.

The best advice we can give is simple: be yourself. Your personality, your story, your style, and the way you connect with people are things nobody else can duplicate. Building an audience that genuinely likes you takes longer than copying trends, but it’s also much more sustainable. Stop trying to be the next seller. Be the first version of yourself. That’s where your real audience is waiting. 💕✨

Sometimes the scariest thing in business is knowing when it’s time to pivot.

When we started selling on Whatnot, we were selling boutique clothing because I had previously owned a brick-and-mortar women’s boutique. After moving to Africa for almost two years, we came back with hundreds of boutique items sitting in storage and needed a way to move them. The challenge was that boutique clothing has a much higher cost, which means higher prices. Competing against sellers running $1 starts wasn’t easy as a new seller.

That’s when we made the switch to liquidation. We started with an Amazon brand called Merokeety and were sourcing items for around $1-$2 each. It allowed us to run $1 starts, grow our audience, and learn the platform. Eventually that inventory disappeared when our supplier started going out of business, so we pivoted again and moved into Target pallets. As our costs increased, our start prices gradually climbed from $1 to $5, then $10, $15, $20, and eventually $25 starts. Getting buyers comfortable with $25 starts on Target merchandise wasn’t easy, especially when most sellers are starting between $1 and $6. But somehow we made it work. Looking back, I’m proud that we were able to push the boundaries of what people thought was possible in that category. At the same time, growth becomes difficult when you’re competing against sellers with much lower starting prices.

Now we’re coming full circle. We’re clearing out our Target inventory and returning to boutique shows. Boutique has always been the goal because it gives us complete freedom to curate our inventory, build collections, and create a shopping experience that truly reflects our vision. It may be more work, but sometimes the best move isn’t chasing what’s easiest. Sometimes it’s returning to what you wanted from the beginning.
