Today I'm making Lady Bits Intimate Soap. After adding the lye solution (made with apple cider vinegar), the batter goes through an interesting color change.

Most of us thought we would never use the math we learned in school for everyday tasks, but it's an important skill for soapmaking.

I use online soap calculators to help me create the perfect recipe based on the fatty acid profile of each oil I use, and knowing basic math, especially percentages, helps to scale recipes up and down. I didn't like math very much, but I'm glad I paid attention back then.

What's another skill we all should have in our modern world?

As I mixed the cocoa powder into the batter (see previous video) to create a brown tone, I was unsure if it was enough. The batter was fairly light and seemed to disappear into the orange-y color and I couldn't see the contrast when I poured or when I cut. I was pleased a week later when the swirls decided to showup.

Indigo Road Tallow Soap (made with grass-fed beef tallow) is a nod to that much anticipated road trip to a distant locale promising relief from the daily grind.

Summer Sorbet Tallow Soap reminds me of a cool sweet treat at the end of a long, hot day.

If you're a new soapmaker just starting out and you'd like to use natural colorants for your soaps, look no further than your pantry.

Cocoa powder makes the perfect brown. Matcha powder was made for green. Annatto seed or powder infused into your oils creates a vibrant yellow. Turmeric tints your soap a brilliant orange to start, then turns a rustic shade as the batter dries. As you grow your craft, you'll learn what works and doesn't work.

Do not use beet root powder for reds. It will turn brown in soap. Butterfly pea flower, a brilliant blue in tea, will also turn brown. Sometimes it takes trial and error, or you can do your research and save yourself the surprise color failures. Most of all, have fun as you make natural soaps for you and your family.

I laughed when this happened! Sometimes pouring soap can be messy. Clean up and keep pouring.

No soap was harmed while filming this video. The spilled soap I scraped into the container was used for a house soap.
