Skin Allergies And Contact Dermatitis: The Basics

Something touches your skin, and your immune system thinks it’s under attack. It overreacts and sends antibodies to help fight the invader, called an allergen. The result is a red, itchy rash where the substance landed.

Your doctor calls this contact dermatitis. There are two types:

Irritant contact dermatitis is caused by chemicals like harsh cleaners.
Allergic contact dermatitis is just like it sounds — your body reacts to an allergy trigger.
People who have allergies react to things that wouldn’t bother most others.Anything from plants like poison ivy to dyes and fragrances found in everyday products might be allergens.

You could also have an allergic reaction to something in the air that settles on your skin, like pollen, chemical sprays, powders, fibers, or cigarette smoke. This is called airborne contact dermatitis, and it mostly happens on your eyelids, head, and neck. It can be hard for doctors to diagnose because it doesn’t look that different from the other type.

Skin allergies can also cause hives and swelling deep in your skin, called angioedema.

If you can’t avoid contact with an allergy trigger, you can usually treat the rash and ease the itching. And you can’t pass it to anyone else.

What Causes Skin Allergies?
It takes at least 10 days to become sensitive to something after your first contact with it. You might even be able to touch something for years before you have an allergic reaction to it.

But once you develop an allergy, you could have a reaction within a few minutes of coming into contact with it. Or it might take a day or two.

The most common causes of skin allergies include:

Nickel, a metal used in jewelry and snaps on jeans, makeup, lotions, soaps, and shampoos
Sunscreens and bug sprays
Medications you put on your skin, like antibiotics or anti-itch creams
Fragrances
Cleaning products
Plants, including poison ivy
Latex, which is used in stretchy things like plastic gloves, elastic in clothing, condoms, and balloons
Chemicals
You’re more likely to have certain skin allergies if you a have skin condition like eczema (your doctor may call it atopic dermatitis), inflammation in your lower legs because of poor circulation, itching in your private parts, or you often get swimmer’s ear.

How do I Find Out What I’m Allergic To?
Your doctor can check to see what you’re reacting to, but finding the exact cause may be hard. Skin tests can only show what you’re sensitive to. They can’t tell what touched your skin in a specific spot on a specific day.

Doctors often use the TRUE test. It’s a pre-packaged set of three panels that your doctor will stick to your back. Each is smaller than a dollar bill and has 12 patches with samples of possible allergens. You wear them for 2 days. Then the doctor takes them off to see if you’ve had any reactions. You might need to come back a few more times, since some reactions could show up as many as 10 days later.

You might be allergic to something that isn’t in the standard TRUE test. To figure that out, your doctor may do more patch testing. He’ll choose substances you might contact in your work, home, or hobbies.

If you have a mild reaction in any patch test, you might need to follow up with a ROAT test. It works a lot like the TRUE test, but you do it yourself. Put the suspected allergen, say, sunscreen, on your skin during the day in the same spot over several days. This can help confirm or rule out your sensitivity.

The dimethylglyoxime test looks for metal objects that have enough nickel to cause a reaction. Your doctor can test things in the office, or you can buy a kit to test jewelry and other items yourself.

7 New Ways To Wear White

MAKE YOUR WHITE SKIRT A FULL SKIRT

Brighten your spring wardrobe with pieces of white: the color dominated spring runways, and celebrities were quick to embrace updated ways to rock the timeless hue. To start, put away your pencil skirts in favor of one that’s full and white. Pair it with a skinny neutral belt and loose tank blouse, as seen on the Bottega Veneta runway, or try a lightweight skirt like Diane Kruger.
LAYER IT ON

White looks just as good as a single item as it does on an entire outfit, as shown here on Leighton Meester. On the runway, Alexander Wang layered white upon white upon white and finished the look with white hair accessories, a white purse and white shoes. Think it’s too much? Not this spring.
KEEP IT MINIMAL FOR EVENING

Long white dresses aren’t just for bridal gowns anymore. The elegant look is streamlined and stripped of extras in favor of sleek silhouettes with long sleeves. Gwyneth Paltrow mastered the chic, minimal look in an Emilio Pucci gown and Derek Lam showed off his version on his spring runway.
SHOW OFF SHEER

Spring offers a way to wear sheer for all styles. For a full-out sheer look, D&G showed off a whimsical see-through dress, layered over a bra top and bloomer shorts on the spring runway. Meanwhile, Natalie Portman tried a more attainable approach, with sheer sleeves on her white frock.
WEAR IT TAILORED

Precisely tailored white jackets and pants appeared on the runways, as shown here at Stella McCartney. Wear tailored white top-to-bottom, like Heidi Klum (in Ann Taylor), or mix and match your separates to vary your outfit options.
TRENCHCOATS MOVE BEYOND KHAKI

Sure, a good khaki trenchcoat is a wardrobe staple. But this season, try the same cut you love in white instead. Michael Kors designed a great belted version with a wide lapel and celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe was recently spotted in her own white trench, which she cinched with a wide black belt.
ADD SOME SHINE WITH METALLICS

Turn a casual outfit into something party-worthy with shades of metallic, especially silver. Balmain showed off a tailored white blazer and camisole with fitted silver pants, and Glee star Lea Michele tucked a white blouse into a silver and white printed skirt by Jenni Kayne.

Lowly Pencil Still The Write Tool

But the eraser pencil has exhibited remarkable staying power amid the rise of the typewriter, the ballpoint pen, the personal computer and all manner of modern hand-held messaging devices over its century-and-a-half existence. In fact, the U.S. is the single largest market for wood-encased pencils today, most of which now come from China. Even the more expensive mechanical pencil has not replaced what is for many writers and note-takers a tried and true basic. It has seen a steady increase in production over the last decade, according to figures from the Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association.
“There’s a historic preference for the pencil in the U.S.,” said Charles Berolzheimer, 47-year-old heir to the Berol pencil brand. “Maybe partly because there’s a tactile sensation to making a mark on paper with it.” His family has manufactured pencils or their raw materials for six generations, and today he is the president of California Cedar Products Co., which exports the state’s high quality incense cedar to manufacturers abroad.

15 Easy, Fashionable Spring Outfits

pring is here, which means goodbye blanket scarves, goodbye boots, goodbye turtle necks. The first few weeks of a new season is always the hardest. Is it still acceptable to wear boots or is it time to put the boots away? Can you still wear vests? Are last season’s trends still in? The answer to all of those are yes, but to a certain limit. For example, you can still wear boots as long as the weather abides and as long as they are short/ankle. Vests are still a thing, but it’s how you wear it, what you wear underneath it, is what really matters. Some fall trends are still a thing but in a different fashion and worn in a different way. For example, skirts are still insanely popular, especially jean skirts, however, the suede skirts are being replaced with floral fabrics and one-shoulder silhouettes are bigger than ever.

The Spring season is brighter than ever and has so much potential. It’s time to clean out your closet and find those Spring essentials.

Pencil Skirts That Aren’t Just Boring Office Wear
Don’t try to deny it: When you hear “pencil skirt,” you probably flash back to trying to stuff yourself into a boring black skirt from the T.J. Maxx clearance rack in preparation for your first-ever job interview.

Back in the day, pencil skirts were considered glamorous and sexy to the point where teens were warned against wearing them lest they feel too frisky. Somewhere along the way, they lost some of their luster and gained a reputation for being frumpy or stuffy, generally relegated to office wear. Not to mention the fact that they’re hard to walk in. Unless you’re Joan from Mad Men, it can be a hard look to pull off.

But thanks to the rising popularity of the midi-skirt over the past few years (as well as several updates to the classic pencil skirt that walked down the fall 2017 runways), there are more flattering and more fun options than ever. There’s no need to resign yourself to the classic options in tweed, navy, charcoal, and black; you can find the silhouette in bright colors and more forgiving fabrics, embellished with ruffles, prints, bows, side slits, and more.

In Praise Of Pencil Skirts

Fashion moments come in many forms. They can happen in an haute couturesalon in Paris or on a television screen; on the steps of a cathedral or falling out of a hotel bar.

My favourite recent fashion moment came in the corridor of a Milan hotel, where I happened to be trapped in a crush after a fashion show, directly behind Carine Roitfeld. Next to me was a senior editor from American Vogue, and for a full 10 seconds we both stood staring at Carine’s bottom, which was sporting a Givenchy black pencil skirt so divinely sculpted that it was, somehow, both filthily sexy and chic beyond reproach. After our shared moment of appreciation, the American reached over to Carine, tapped her on the shoulder, and complimented her on the skirt. Carine, the former editor of French Vogue, thanked her, and nodded in agreement. “Goes out, goes in, goes out” she said, while lightly tracing the curves of the back view of the skirt – out from her waist over her bottom, in again underneath it, and kicking out slightly at the back of the knee – with her hands. Then she flashed us that minxy, Cheshire cat grin over her shoulder and was gone.

A skirt that can make a grown woman come over all lascivious about her own bottom: we all need a bit of that in our lives, don’t we? (We also need to learn to accept compliments more like Carine. Her answer was so much more fabulous than the oh-my-god-this-is-so-old-and-I-think-I’ve-bust-a-seam response that many of us would have given.) The pencil skirt is the real hero of this season’s wardrobe. You’ve bought a coat, it’s too early to think about party dresses, and you’re already a bit bored by the jumper with a dog on it you ordered on a whim. Therefore, November is all about a pencil skirt.

Christina Ricci’s Pan Am uniform, coming soon to BBC2, promises to boost the pencil skirt back up the fashion ratings. To be brutally honest, Ricci probably isn’t going to rock a pencil skirt with quite the swagger the other Christina (Hendricks, in Mad Men) did (who can, right?). But what the Pan Am take on the pencil skirt does is move the look on from office-vamp territory. Pan Am is set in 1963, the same year as series three of Mad Men, but Ricci’s skirt is in a cheery sky blue rather than black, and not hobble-inducingly tight. This makes it very on-trend: Jonathan Saunders’s printed pencil skirts in soft, matt tones of tomato red, oatmeal and turquoise were the catwalk-to-front-row hit of the season. I have now sat next to that skirt so many times that I have almost convinced myself it is a good thing I don’t own it myself. (Not quite.)

The pencil skirt trend is a lifestyle thing. The typing-pool genes make it office-appropriate but the fashion angle gives it cocktail credentials, so this is a look that works morning to night, Monday to Friday. Kate Middleton often wears a pencil skirt on official engagements, because she is good at knowing how the media will “read” her clothes and a pencil skirt makes her look in step with working women. (She is also developing a signature narrow silhouette – pencil skirt and blouse, or shift dress – which, like the Queen’s hats and colours, makes her identifiable at long range.)

There are currently three pencil skirt types. The Posh Pencil, à la Carine, high-fashion and fabulously tailored (Givenchy and McQueen do the best, if you have that kind of cash). This kind of skirt will make anything – a simple blouse, a shell top and jacket – look amazing. Alternatively, you can do the Fashion Pencil, which is slightly longer (the seriously fashionable just love to wrangle with a tricky length) and in a slightly “off” colour or fabric. You can wear this with your dog jumper.
