Kat Eggleston, fresh off her performance in the premiere of Brokeback Mountain at Chicago Shakes, has written a compelling play that is surprising in its scope. The play tells the sometimes dark story of our human condition from the perspective of a tiny bird, the Dreoilon.
Hunted by The Wren Boys and sacrificed each year on St. Stephen’s Day, The Wren speaks for itself and pleads for our awareness of human cruelty, in all its forms. All this takes place in the iconic Charleston Bar, full of characters and musicians sharing Irish music and profundity during a cold winter in Chicago, 1997.

Designing costumes and collaborating with this talented cast and crew was a peak experience for me. You just don’t get better than this, said Kevin Joyce, who’s performance as The Wren was most incredible and unforgettable.

Meet Sophie and Jess.
I met them at Seattle Wedding Show .
Sophie was having no luck finding a dress, and really connected with my sustainable redesign services. She resonated with the concepts of sourcing a dress second-hand and making it her own. I directed Sophie towards Brides for a Cause and what she should look for in a good dress to redesign: find a dress with the silhouette or style that suits you, fabric/textile that you like, and make sure it has a train, for extra fabric to re-use!

In our first fitting, a few things were clear-
The bust needed reshaping, and the dress overall was too big, which are great problems to have when re-making! We also determined the grey mesh underlay meant to pop the unique lace design was actually making the gown appear dingy. So we got rid of it.

I went to work separating the bodice from the skirt, removing the grey mesh, redrafting a new bodice pattern, cutting off the train to determine the piecing of the new pattern pieces - and wouldn’t you know it. The pattern pieces aligned perfectly within the cut-off train shape of the lace! It was a synchronous sewing situation, my happy place where the creative magic happens and the new design really starts to gel.

Jess’s dress was easy-peasy, as this Amazonian queen found her dress at one of my fave’s, PRETTY PARLOR and it only needed hemming.
The gals needed these dresses to dance the night away, so hems were important to get just right.

The final fitting we went all out!
Liz set us up with bottle service and snacks from Wine Shop Vashon , a guest was invited and we did the final tweaking to Sophia’s dress, deciding on a corset-style back closure.

Ok, so this is where I really geek out and can’t help myself, but I ended up using the trim of Jess’s hem to construct the lacing of Sophie’s dress, because “Jess always has Sophie’s back”.
And then I made a garter for Sophie to give Jess that was made from the lace cuttings of Sophie’s dress. I know, I’m cheesy and I can’t help it!

A Love like their’s makes you do funny things.

And I am so grateful they traveled from Seattle for these incredible fittings at my Sew Studio.

Early this year, as I was planning how to end one business and begin another, a fantastic project landed in my lap- a restoration of an 18th century costume to be worn at The Grand Masked Ball, held annually at The Orangery, in Versailles, France.
I weirdly had it in my mind’s eye that a Marie Antoinette style project was in my future, so when this opportunity arrived,
I said HELLO, I’ve been waiting for you!

My client brought me the costume, which she had purchased at the Seattle Opera annual costume sale.
It was perfect- and 6 sizes too big.

Before we could fit the pieces properly, we needed to acquire the under structure-
the panniers and stays. Once we had those, we could start to scale down.

I had to remove piping and reshape, cut off inches at the correct seams, and put it all back together again. The skirt required re-draping and re-pleating over the panniers, so I had to take it all apart. This was a good thing because I could reshape the reveal of the underskirt and reduce the bulk and weight by faking the yellow underskirt, and making it a more flattering shape.

Working on a true Theater-made Costume was such a nostalgic trip for me- costume construction is my origin story. There are many similarities between apparel construction and costume construction, but costumes are a thing of their own. It felt like a good omen to be working on such a complex project and celebrate how far I have come in my skills and abilities.

I feel really blessed to get to work on such incredible projects and with such incredible clients- Thank you Wendy, you are a delight.

Another memorable Sip & Sew at Wine Shop Vashon was had by all!

These ladies told some tale!
The stories, the laughter, the understanding, the moments of focused silence and the sound of live jazz all stitched into our Sashiko projects.

The three hour therapy of being together, learning something new and making something with your hands is age-old and reliably good for you - Join us!
