The El Jardin Patio on Main Street in Ventura was one of the first malls in Southern California. El Jardin Patio was designed by the famous Los Angeles architectural firm of Weber, Staunton and Spalding in 1924 for G. W. Chrisman and his daughter Mary Alpin. Mary Alpin ran La Floreia, a flower shop on the front west side of the courtyard, for many years. Mary’s son, William Alpin, a photographer for Sunset Magazine and the local newspapers, had his studio in the rear of the courtyard. There are still wonderful shops and shopping at El Jardin today.
