Did you ever wonder where Pitas Point also known as Faria Beach, here in Ventura County, got its name?

The Chumash people have a rich history at Faria Beach. This coastal area was an important site for Chumash settlement and activity for centuries before European contact.

The Portolá expedition of 1769-1770 was a pivotal Spanish exploration of Alta California that laid the groundwork for Spain’s colonization of the Californias. Led by Gaspar de Portolá, governor of Las Californias, the group camped at a Chumash Village located at what is presently know as Pitas Point or Faria Beach.

August 15, 1769: The group traveled northwest along the coast to Pitas Point. The name originated from the explorer’s account of the pipes or whistles (los pitos) played by the local natives, which kept the explorers awake throughout the night.

It’s important to note that the transition from Chumash inhabitation to Spanish colonial control and eventually to private ownership under Spanish land grants represents a complex history of land transfer and cultural change in the region.

Manuel de Terra Faria, a Portuguese immigrant born around 1877 in the Azores, purchased 325 acres of land in the Rincon area west of Ventura in 1907, including 22 acres on the beach. This land would eventually become the Faria Beach Colony. Cont’d in comments 👇
