THE REAL SIDE
The Yelpoholic crew took on Kansas for the weekend, but unfortunately struck out. This video shows the real side of turkey hunting. The real side of turkey hunting is what makes us come back for more... the reason we are all YELPOHOLICS.
The Story:
Crew members Gracie and Douglas Herman took a trip down to Kansas for the weekend in hopes of filling their tags. This morning hunt was looking mighty fine. Gobbles surrounded the woods. They walked up to a beautiful opening that just looked perfect. After sitting for a while, a bird gobbled just in front of them. The sound of sticks breaking and wings flapping was a sign of GO TIME. He’s on the ground. Gracie was running the gun and was set up with three paths that this ol boy could walk out of any moment. Douglas Herman started the soft yelps which had this bird hooked. He couldn’t stay away. He gobbled, and gobbled, and gobbled, and then went quiet. Ol boy was still out of sight. Then, out of no where, this bird gobbled the LOUDEST gobble ever known to man. (I really don’t think I’ve ever jumped so hard in my life). That’s when Doug knew that Gracie needed to get turned to face the path that the gobbler was walking on. When turning, a branch fell over the sight, blocking the view of the turkey. Frustration and panic set in. He walked up and stood there for a moment, but was still out of sight where Gracie was set up at. The bird walked up the path a little further, did not like what he saw, and left.
Of course, like every turkey hunter, I questioned my abilities and everything I knew about turkey hunting leading up to that moment. Questions ran through my head.
What could I have done? Could I have moved just slightly? Would he have saw me? Should I have just shot?
The answer is no, it’s just the reality of turkey hunting.
