Chris and I took a Waymo today and while it wasn’t fully accessible for us, it still made me think about independence. About accessibility. About how much energy disabled people spend navigating systems that weren’t built with them in mind.

Chris has always loved technology, and I sometimes wonder if part of that is because of the doors it opens for him — the ways it can make the world feel a little bigger, more accessible, more possible.

And beyond all of the larger conversations happening right now around advancing technology, this brought him a huge amount of joy. It genuinely felt like watching one of his dreams come to life in real time.

But Chris did great and now he knows what to do — and that he can do this on his own.

Even if you’re not ready to fully step back, shadowing from a distance is a great way to let someone try things on their own. Just be sneakier than I was 🫠

has been following us since 2024, we’ve never met in person but she often DMs to send kind messages or ask if we’re ok. She reached out when she saw we were at Disneyland over spring break and invited Chris and I to studio. Chris had to go back to Maui while I stayed a few extra days and my self doubt thought since Chris wouldn’t be available maybe the invite was off the table.

A few days later I found myself in an enormous special effects studio, with a 3D printer room making molds for monster feet, an artist making robotic eyeballs, yards and yards of handmade dinosaur skin and creatures and monsters on the wall that I’ve known since childhood.

I got to sit down and chat with Alaine, her husband Alec, their daughter Bella and grandson Honor who has Down Syndrome.

Beyond thankful to have been able to connect in person and meet such a kind and loving family ❤️
