And making swimwear is actually a big part of my sewing history. Before The Sandy Seamstress, I owned Sable Rose Bikinis, my Maui-made reversible swimwear company, where I designed and made custom bikinis right here on the island.

Even though that chapter has changed, I never stopped making swimsuits. 💕

This reel sparked some controversy, so I thought I’d clarify. 😊🧵

Garment alterations are their own animal—a specialized niche within the sewing world. Many incredibly talented sewists, quilters, pattern makers, and clothing designers don’t offer alterations. And if you’ve been in the sewing world for a while, you know the running joke about being asked to hem someone’s pants. 😂

But here at The Sandy Seamstress… we actually LOVE it. ❤️ Fittings, repairs, tailoring, and giving garments a second life are what we do every day.

And the best part? Our sewing community is growing.

We’ve had the privilege of teaching hundreds of keiki and adults, and our mission is to help keep the seamstress profession alive by passing these skills on to the next generation.

We LOVE sewists of every skill level. Whether you’re learning to hem your own clothes, dreaming of launching a swimwear brand, creating handmade pieces, or building a career as a professional seamstress—we’re here to cheer you on.

Every person who learns to sew contributes to a more sustainable future and keeps the art of handmade alive. 🪡

With our alteration services currently booking about 3 weeks out, the need for skilled seamstresses is very real. This has never been about competition. It’s about growing together, creating opportunities, and making sure this incredible profession continues for generations to come.

We’re in our cool girl sewing era this summer🧵✨

It’s been amazing to see how much these students accomplish in such a short time. From complete beginners to confidently creating garments, bags, quilts, swimwear, and so much more—it never gets old watching someone realize, “I made this.”

We couldn’t be more proud of our growing sewing community here on Maui. 💙

Our end-of-August classes and some fall courses are already live, with even more classes, workshops, and special events coming soon.

Maybe a Netflix documentary isn’t happening anytime soon… but who knows? 😂🎬

If it ever does, I hope it’s about how a small sewing studio on Maui helped revive a trade that was quietly disappearing.

Today, it’s estimated that there are less than 40,000 professional seamstresses left in the United States, and the average age is 54 years old. For generations, sewing was a skill passed down from parents and grandparents. Somewhere along the way, that tradition began to fade.

We’re here to change that.

At The Sandy Seamstress, we’re building more than a sewing studio—we’re building a movement.

And this is just the beginning.

In the near future, we’ll be launching our Seamstress Academy—a place where students can train for a career that’s creative, practical, and needed everywhere.

Becoming a seamstress isn’t just learning how to sew, it’s about having a fulfilling career, and providing a much needed skill to the world, where you can:

One year in business.

Several lifetimes of sewing experience. 🪡😂

Sometimes I joke that I’ve been sewing for centuries, but honestly, it feels that way. From learning as a kid, to studying fashion and couture in New York City, to opening The Sandy Seamstress here on Maui, every stitch has led me here.

This month marks one year since we opened our doors, and what an incredible year it’s been. We’ve welcomed hundreds of students, altered countless garments, expanded into a second studio space, and built an amazing sewing community that continues to grow every day.

Here’s to another year of creativity, learning, and keeping this art alive—one stitch at a time. 🧵✨
