“The ONLY Church of Christ IS the Catholic Church, and only in her are realized and subsists in fullness all the truths and all means of salvation of the Church of Christ.” - Bishop Athanasius Schneider

The Catholic Church is the Church started by Christ himself, which has faithfully passed down his teachings guided by the Holy Spirit. (Matt. 16:18) Protestants and other sects of Christianity cannot make that claim. They were started by fallible men who broke off and said they knew better than God and started their own church based on Jesus’s Church...but changed a bit (or a lot!) to fit how they wanted it to be (for divorce to be allowed, for good works to be unnecessary, for any literate yet uneducated person to be able to just read the Bible - an incredibly complex, theologically rich, and historically and culturally context dependent text - and somehow not err in interpretation, for the Eucharist to be all of the sudden “just a symbol” despite the plethora of Biblical and traditional/historical/even scientific evidence otherwise, because they didn’t like the pope, etc.).

If you aren’t Catholic you aren’t (fully) part of Jesus’s Church - change my mind.

Another example of where the Bible says you can’t simply “believe” and be saved, you’ve got to live the gospel not just accept it as true! “Otherwise your coming to believe was in vain.”

“O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” 1 Cor 15:55

Jesus raised his friend Lazarus as a sign that he will not only raise himself, but us too if we are his friends!

As we continue to celebrate Christ’s resurrection this Eastertide let us rejoice and have hope for our own resurrection, growing ever closer to the Lord in friendship so we too will be raised!

Lately I’ve been focusing on custody of the heart. As usual, just as I started to realize I needed to work on it, God provided me some on topic spiritual reading! Check out this great excerpt from a book I 1000% recommend, “Soul of the Apostolate” by J.B. Chautard:

“Prayer and liturgical Life will enable me to make a start to unite myself with God. But it is custody of the heart which will help the traveler to profit by the food taken before the march begins, or during a halt, and thus keep up the fine pace of the beginnings.

This custody of the heart is simply the habitual or at least frequent anxiety to keep, in all my actions, according as they come along, freedom from all that could corrupt their motives or their ex*****on.

This anxiety must be calm, at ease, without strain, at once humble and strong, since it is based on filial appeal to God and confidence in this appeal. It is the work of my heart and my will, much more than of my mind, which must remain free for the doing of my duty. Far from troubling my action, custody of the heart makes it more perfect by regulating it by the spirit of God and adapting it to the duties of my position.”

“My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord;
I know them and they follow me.”

The voice of the Lord is the voice of Truth. If someone or something (even your heart) is telling you to do something against the teachings of the Church or against charity, it is not Jesus! Yes, even our hearts can be misled.

That’s why it’s SO SO important that we truly KNOW our Faith and we know Jesus in the Gospels and God as revealed throughout the Bible and Tradition. There is a tendency now to relativize Jesus, to make him one of many ways to God, to make him a wise tolerant guru rather than THE Way. But that’s not the real Jesus, and that’s not real Christianity. The real Jesus was above all, merciful and loving, BUT, he never compromised truth for feelings or supported a “you do you just be a good person” attitude. He was...dare I say it..divisive! The Truth divides as much as it hurts sometimes, but ultimately it sets us free - free to love the one true God, the Holy Trinity, with all our hearts, minds, and spirits. Let us learn the teachings of Christ from his Church and learn his authentic voice so that we might not be led astray!

"It is a lesson we all need - to let alone the things that do not concern us. He has other ways for others to follow Him; all do not go by the same path. It is for each of us to learn the path by which He requires us to follow Him, and to follow Him in that path." ~ Katharine Drexel

It’s so tempting to find our favorite saints and want to be like them - which is great! But we also have to remember that God is calling each of us on our own path to sainthood! What are you doing today to become Saint [your name] today?

“To see a priest making his meditation before Mass does more for an altar boy’s vocation than a thousand pieces of inspirational literature.” - Fulton J. Sheen

And in this quote we see the heart of why it is traditionally only altar boys, not girls, until 1994. Serving at the altar is meant to increase vocations to the priesthood, which for many just reasons is reserved only for men. Is it any wonder now that ordinations are at an all time low after 20+ years of girls taking over (in many places I see more girls than boys now) the duty of altar serving? For every girl serving at the altar that’s one more boy that isn’t, who may miss a vocation because he never even considered it.

Those girls will often appreciate the opportunity and grow in holiness and love for the mass, but when they grow up they will not be able to one day say the Mass. They often even do the job better depending on their age. I know because I was one of those girls. And now, knowing what I know, seeing the decline of the church and the painfully few young holy priests I can’t help but wonder if there could have been more had I stepped aside and encouraged my male classmates to alter serve instead. This isn’t an issue about equality, it’s about functionality. I’m all about women’s rights and equality, but that also means recognizing that some things can and should be just for the boys, just as some things are just for the girls. And that’s ok.

Pray for our priests and altar servers, and pray for vocations!

“When you are before the altar where Christ reposes, you ought no longer to think that you are amongst men; but believe that there are troops of angels and archangels standing by you, and trembling with respect before the sovereign Master of Heaven and earth.”
- St. John Crysostom
