Hi! 👋 Today I’d like to take the time to formally introduce myself to you. I’m Betsy Cohen, founder of ZOPHIA since 2010. This brand was started by accident. After a failed attempt at a career in fashion in New York City, I decided to continue to feed my creative needs through a sketchbook. At the time, around 2008, I felt very discouraged. Coming back home to DC made me feel like the biggest loser. So, I kept a sketchbook, got a job and tried to move forward. All my fashion aspirations were to wait until after 5PM Monday through Friday.
One day in January of 2010, I was sitting in my office, desperately wishing I could be sketching or doing something artistic with my time. I pulled out a few blank sheets of paper under piles of files on my desk. Within minutes I found myself lost in the joy of sketching a dress I’d wear. At that moment it was as if something hit me. I could still be in fashion, I just had to create the company myself. I’d never thought in a million years that I’d be up for starting a business.
That precise moment I started brainstorming logos and names for this business. A business that would give me the opportunity to still do what kept me alive. Throughout the years it’s been exciting but also extremely hard. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve felt like giving up.
Today is one of those moments. This global pandemic feels like an avalanche on a personal and professional level. We all feel it. It’s not going away, we just have to face it. At least that’s what i’ve been telling myself. It will all end soon and we’ll be back to making custom pencil skirts.
I hope you’ve enjoyed learning more about the story of ZOPHIA ! I’m incredibly grateful to have such supportive clients, fashion friends and a supportive creative community in Washington, D.C. Wishing you all a wonderful and safe weekend. Show us some love tomorrow for . We’ll have giftcards up on the shop and 30% off all orders.
Oh and yes this is me on my couch in quarantine CEO gear.
Love you all!
