Sandhill Cranes are very large, tall birds with a long neck, long legs, and very broad wings. The bulky body tapers into a slender neck; the short tail is covered by drooping feathers that form a “bustle.” The head is small and the bill is straight and longer than the head.

How big is a crane bird
The smallest crane species has a size of only 90 cm (Demoiselle Crane), while the biggest species (Sarus crane) can reach a size of up to 175 cm, which is similar to the body size of adult humans. All crane species are connected with wetlands, which are necessary for breeding and to raise their juveniles.

Cranes are solitary during the breeding season, occurring in pairs, but during the nonbreeding season, most species are gregarious, forming large flocks where their numbers are sufficient. It is the innocent, the smallest of us who need our attention. This baby bird clearly was looking for light or connection when somehow it missed a window for an opening. With all that's going on in the world, all the suffering, all the divisiveness all the lies, all the hopes and fears, this little life extinguished so early, lying still warm in the palm of my hand, brought me to hot tears and released sorrow. The weekend is coming. It should be a time of reconnection and rest and hopefully some fun but often it's a grind and often lonely, so I simply offer this simple message. "Be very gentle with yourself."

The family has 15 species placed in four genera which are Antigone, Balearica, Leucogranus, and Grus.
