My Father was one of 19 soldiers in the 503d Field Artillery Battalion to be awarded the Silver Star. 503d was a Black unit and all fought bravely in some of the most brutal battles in the frozen Korean country side. Their example and courageous conduct contributed to the eventual breakdown of the Army's segregation policy. As read I about their story I think how interesting it would have been to have heard from my father about his experience including time spent as a POW. I did not have that chance, my father passed when I was young. My faint memory of him was someone who was haunted by something. I did not connect with him or he was unable to connect to me. The Silver Star Letter was something I found after my Mother passed 20 years ago. The insight it gives me about my Father does make me a proud son.
Some day we may not have wars but we always remember Veterans.
