The lock pictured below once held the bars shut on the detention cell at Annaberg Plantation.

On this day, November 05, 1840, a man named Joe Popp escaped from Annaberg’s cell and made his way to freedom on nearby Tortola. With his escape, he left behind a legend that inspired St. John’s enslaved community to sing songs in his honor.
