Big news here at Octothreads- we welcomed designer Alexus to the shop in July. We're going to have one of her designs on white t-shirts at our popup sale Friday August 12 at our shop. Exciting news! We're going to do a popup sale at the shop this Friday, August 12 from 5:30-8:30 at our 205 Farnsworth location in Waterville (the back parking area). For you local we have some really cool Waterville hats (yes, H2O, like water, OH like Ohio... you get it) in a bunch of colors including the popular Anthony Wayne colors on genuine snap-back hats with the holographic label on the bill. The hats are in stock and ready to go and on sale for just $20!

Appliqué is fabric sewn onto something, like the numbers and names on a football jersey. Here’s how it’s made: we use our plotter/cutter, which is a CNC-controlled knife, to cut out the shapes and letters from polyester twill fabric (this part’s not in the video). Then we use the embroidery machine to trace the exact outline of the pieces of fabric. The fabric has pressure-sensitive adhesive on the back. Once the outline is finished the machine stops sewing and we carefully line up the shapes with the outline stitches. Then the machine sews a tack-down stitch to hold it all in place, so that when it goes back and sews the satin cover stitch the fabric doesn’t shift. End result: awesome hoodie!

One of the trends in caps is raised "3D" lettering. It's made by sewing over foam. The thread can't press down the foam, and the needle perforates the edge just like paper towel, and when you're done sewing it pulls away from the hat. Here's a time lapse of the process. It doesn't show up in the video- but there is a special tool used to hold the foam down while the machine starts sewing. It's not a good idea to put your hand near the sewing area of an industrial machine.

One of the nice things about embroidery is that through the digitizing process the size of a design can be altered to better fit the size of the garment on which it’s being sewn. It helps avoid the situation you’ve probably seen where the graphic on a 2xl or larger shirt looks comically small because it’s the same size as the graphic printed on a size small shirt. It’s not comic, however, if you’re the one wearing the shirt. Our goal is to make it look good no matter the garment size. In this photo the top hoodie is a size L, and the bottom hoodie is a 2xl, with a proportionately larger design. Pretty cool, right?

There is a maxim in the embroidery field that embroidery should look good from three feet away. We've learned from making lace that it isn't the case. Dealing with the fabric makes things much harder, but embroidery that looks good at 2 1/2 times actual size is possible!

It’s been a while since there were any posts on the page, and in the meantime we’ve been busy making tons of cool stuff. So busy, in fact, that the construction of a web site has been neglected. But a web site is on the horizon! (with the help of a developer to do most of the work.) In the meantime we’ll be posting some small and specific projects you can order until the web site is finished.
