By the onset of the 1970s, fashion took a marked turn away from formality and toward eclecticism. The influence of youth-driven, counter-culture styles can be seen in the vibrantly printed ensembles by Givenchy, Balenciaga’s heir apparent, and the New York ready-to-wear branch of Dior. Their long, fluid, and kinetically graceful garments are marked departures from the more rigidly constructed styles of the preceding decade.
“Dior + Balenciaga: The Kings of Couture and their Legacies” is on view until November 6, 2022.
